Carnegie Science Center connects science and technology with everyday life through hands-on science fun. Our visitors explore and interact with robots, investigate the wonders of the human body, and discover river science and animals. Plus, they enjoy engaging astronomy shows in a planetarium, live theater shows, sports challenges and a ropes course, a real submarine, a huge model railroad – and movies on Pittsburgh’s biggest screen! In addition to providing valuable scientific experiences, Carnegie Science Center offers outreach programs that serve Pittsburgh's diverse community. The Science Center is located on Pittsburgh's North Shore along the banks of the Ohio River and is accessible to persons with disabilities.

The Instructor STEM I will be involved with the implementation and design of hands-on science lessons, workshops, activities, virtual field trips, virtual programs, and demonstrations at STEM programs, events, competitions, and classes.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • A degree in education and experience developing science activities and working with children is recommended.
  • Previous experience working in the classroom or in an after school environment is recommended.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills, have excellent customer service skills, be well organized, able to function effectively in a team environment, and be able to manage a group of students of varied sizes.
  • Must have a passion for the values of first-hand engagement with science, and the priority of increasing students’ interest and involvement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
  • Must be engaging, personable, approachable, adaptable, creative, and flexible in solving any problems that arise during a program and/or event.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work Saturdays and evenings as needed. Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be knowledgeable or able to become familiar with Project Based Learning, Digital Media Learning, 21st Century Skills, and Connected Learning systems.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with other members of the STEM Education department to develop and refine programs, assemble materials, and perform logistical functions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., stand for more than 30 minutes, and have reliable transportation
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Facilitate and present hands-on STEM activities, workshops, virtual field trips, virtual experiences, demonstrations, and project based experiences for K-12 students both on-site and off-site.
  • Collaborate with staff and partners to customize STEM curriculum and contribute suggestions and new ideas.
  • Remain current on developments in STEM.
  • Become familiar with the history and challenges of women and minorities in STEM fields.
  • Ensure that experiences are relevant for participants.
  • Present accurate information on STEM topics and careers.
  • Share enthusiasm about STEM careers and topics.
  • Serve as a role model for participants.
  • Assemble and facilitate safe handling of equipment and supplies.
  • Act as liaison with school personnel, families, program partners, and volunteers.
  • Attend meetings, program outings, and training sessions.
  • Recruit and retain students.
  • Facilitate safe handling of equipment and supplies.
  • Manage logistical aspects of attendance, applications, and departures of students in the programs.
  • Complete data entry of program information.
  • Become familiar with what the Science Center has to offer, especially the STEM Education Department.
  • Become familiar with the personnel and operations of the Science Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.
