Southern's Hotel Division owns and operates four properties - The Hotel at the University of Maryland and The Cambria College Park in College Park, MD, The Hotel at Arundel Preserve in Hanover, MD and Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Macungie, PA. The properties range from a AAA 4-diamond rated conference center to a learn-to-ski full service resort as well as a boutique 150 room independent hotel located between DC, Baltimore and Annapolis and one of the top performing Cambria hotels in the Brand. The dynamic teams at each bring the properties to life and with seasonal employment total nearly 1,500 FTE's. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
The ideal Area Manager is a well-established, high-performing Manager with experience in high-paced and upper-upscale andor luxury independent properties. The Area Manager will help enhance our workplace culture to actively engage our team members and provide both strategic vision and tactical plans to improve our operations. The ability to understand and teach policy, payroll, benefit administration and critical management skills is essential for the Area Manager to be successful. Personality, confidence, compassion and knowledge with an ability to teach and an even greater ability to learn are essential traits for our next Area Manager.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU:
  • Responsible for performing the duties as Human Resources Manager of area properties as assigned - The Hotel at the University of Maryland, Cambria College Park and The Hotel at Arundel Preserve - and providing support to the team at Bear Creek Mountain Resort
  • Coordinate, update and maintain all phases of the Performance Management Appraisal System (assisting with team member support, creating informational tools for team members, reporting on all levels etc.)
  • Management of on-site Human Resource Department at the MD properties with area supporting responsibility for Bear Creek Mountain Resort (BCMR)
  • Serve as the primary conduit for communications with Southern Corporate Human Resources team
  • Coordinate with Southern corporate team regarding hotel changes that may include job descriptions and other hotel related policies and procedures for approval
  • Provide managerial and team member support to team members on the interpretation of Human Resources policies, procedures, guidelines, and programs
  • Administer and train managers/supervisors on effective coaching and counseling
  • Facilitate and process progressive disciplinary procedures
  • Handle all payroll tasks such as ADP timekeeper and biweekly sign-off's, the processing of new hire paperwork, bi-weekly payroll submission, corrections, etc.
  • Distribute W-2's and paystubs as needed
  • Monitor ADP and assist managers to ensure accurate punches, leave hours, and overtime
  • Assist current and previous team members in available options regarding Southern Management's Retirement Funds
  • Oversee and analyze supervisors and managers on methods and approaches to resolve team member work concerns/issues and the need for compliance
  • Ensure unresolved incidents are reported to the appropriate Manager/Supervisor and ensure actions are taken to finalize course to resolution
  • Assist in the coordination and oversee property functions that are Human Resource related (Team Member of the Month Luncheons, Team Building, Celebrations, etc.)
  • Provide support to HotelResort leadership
  • Lead recruiting initiatives for all roles at all MD properties and support BCMR in recruiting as needed
  • Have strong understanding of local and state union trends and the best practices available for training on union practices
  • Attend department meetings and training sessions as necessary
  • Create onboarding plans for new hires and complete all new hire related tasks and paperwork ensuring compliance with all laws and requirements
  • Lead and assist teams with team member discipline, documentation, training and, when necessary, team member terminations
  • Contribute to the team's effort by accomplishing tasks and assisting with projects as needed
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and make appropriate recommendations to modify practices as appropriate to ensure compliance
  • Contribute to team/company engagement efforts
  • Proficient with MS office
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager and/or Supervisor
JOB KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Must be able to distinguish between policies and procedures, and guidelines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with payroll/salaries and all employment issues on a "need to know" basis
  • Familiar with Labor Laws and managing Hotel unemployment cases
  • Ability to work with multiple properties leaders and team members to create alignment and improve efficiencies and overall performance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Extremely strong leadership and managerial skills
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful, high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and guest satisfaction
  • Technical knowledgeable and competency in necessary systems and software:
    [Outlook, Word, Excel, ADP, ProfitSword, etc.]

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years demonstrated Human Resources experience in a hospitality environment; Independent hotel experience preferred
  • Minimum four-years supervisory Human Resources experience
  • Experience in recruiting strongly preferred
  • Associates degree in relevant field required and bachelor's degree and/or SHRM certification preferred
