Position Description:
The USSTRATCOM History Office provides a broad range of historical support to the Combatant Command and subordinate joint headquarters by capturing the official history of their roles in the development and implementation of national security policy. The History Office also serves as the central historical collection point and research office for USSTRATCOM.

Position Requirements:
  • The Historian shall produce the USSTRATCOM Official History.
    • Following guidance from the Command or Deputy Command Historian, the historian shall collect pertinent data related to the role of USSTRATCOM in the development, implementation, and execution of national security policy from documentary sources, research interviews, and appropriate external sources.
    • Applying specialized knowledge of historiographic methods, the historian shall analyze and synthesize this data and produce a professional, objective, narrative history of a wide variety of USSTRATCOM mission-related activities.
    • As appropriate, the historian shall produce tables, charts, and other appendices necessary to support the official history.
  • The Historian shall produce other Historical Products.
    • Following guidance from the Command or Deputy Command Historian, the historian shall collect and collate data, and prepare short information papers to provide useful historical or analytical insight to the CDR, USSTRATCOM staff, and other agencies as required.
    • The historian shall conduct research and write special studies on assigned USSTRATCOM topics. Special studies are longer and more in-depth than information papers and require high levels of scholarship.
    • The historian shall prepare for assigned interviews by researching primary and secondary sources to develop appropriate questions; conduct interviews alone or in conjunction with others; format, edit, and revise transcripts; and ensure transcripts and audio recordings are properly accessioned into the USSTRATCOM Operational Archive and Reference Collection.
  • The Historian shall answer Information Requests.
    • At the request of the Command or Deputy Command Historian, the historian shall collect, collate, and analyze data, and prepare concise research responses to requests for information received from the Commander, Deputy Commander, Chief of Staff, USSTRATCOM Staff, other US military organizations, government agencies, and the general public, etc.
Position Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of a broad range of historical fields, with emphasis on one or more of the following: modern military history, strategic deterrence theory, post-World War II defense policy, post-World War II foreign policy, kinetic and non-kinetic strategic weapons and warfare, arms control, and disarmament, and/or strategic nuclear/ nuclear weapons planning and policy.
  • Knowledge of guidelines and instructions dealing with the protection of classified information, the release of sensitive information and the Freedom of Information Act.
  • Professional knowledge of archival principles, concepts, methodology, techniques, and a familiarity with National Archive and Records Administration (NARA) standards and publications, with an advanced degree in Archival Studies or Library and Information Science. Minimum five (5) or more years of demonstrated relevant experience.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and catalog large amounts of diversely formatted data drawn from a wide variety of sources and critically evaluate materials to determine worthiness for inclusion in the archive.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving archival materials, including maintaining comprehensive finding aids.
  • Thorough knowledge of digitization standards, including the development and maintenance of metadata requirements.
Education:
  • M.A. in History required.
  • Minimum five (5) or more years of demonstrated relevant experience.
