The Lloyd A. Fry Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of the people of Chicago faced with challenges rooted in the systems of inequity. We partner with effective nonprofit organizations that share our commitment to building a community in which all individuals and families have the opportunity to thrive. Each year, we award $8 million in grants across four main program areas: Arts Learning, Education, Employment and Health.

Position Summary

We are actively seeking a Health Program Officer to develop and lead the Foundation’s Health Program grantmaking portfolio. Based in Chicago, our Health Program is committed to increasing access to high quality primary care and reducing health care disparities for Chicago’s low-income residents. To accomplish these goals, the Health Program supports:

  • Efforts to implement medical-home models of care which provide comprehensive integrated primary care services across multi-disciplinary team members in single or multiple settings.
  • High quality primary care services that are not widely available to low-income populations (especially dental, vision, and mental health).
  • Community-based activities that connect hard-to-reach individuals to high-quality primary care, particularly through strategic partnerships with healthcare providers.
  • Advocacy for effective policies to increase access to care that reduces healthcare disparities among low-income Chicagoans and residents of Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Health Program grant portfolio, partner with colleagues and the board of directors to develop and implement programmatic goals and strategies, and manage and plan the program grant budget ($2M);
  • Proactively identify challenges amongst grantees that can be addressed through the Foundation’s grantmaking opportunities that have the potential to advance program goals
  • Solicit and review proposals and letters of inquiry, arrange and manage site visits, prepare proposals for board review, and present written and verbal recommendations to the board of directors. Prepare decline letters and work to communicate clearly with grantees as well as with organizations that do not receive support from the Fry Foundation;
  • Partner with grantees to support collaborative work; help organizations advance knowledge and practice in the field; and provide guidance and technical assistance on program strategy, assessments, and other aspects of building capacity and program development.

Qualifications and Experience

The Foundation supports innovative approaches and strategies that advance practice in the field of primary and patient-centered care. To achieve this, we seek a candidate who is able to: identify trends and common challenges among grantee organizations; investigate new topics quickly; synthesize a wide range of information; and apply ideas across new contexts.

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in the health field supporting federally qualified healthcare centers (FQHCs) and/or patient-centered medical homes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, administration, or related field of study is required; Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong analytic and research abilities.
  • An aptitude to actively contribute to intellectual give and take, the ability to ask thoughtful questions, open-mindedness, and comfort challenging ideas and a welcomeness to being challenged;
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is preferred.

Work Environment: The Foundation embraces a culture of collaboration and professional curiosity. Located in Chicago, Illinois, our work is performed in a hybrid work environment (a combination of in-office and remote). The Health Program Officer is expected to travel regularly to conduct local site visits with grantees and community partners. This position will report directly to the Foundation’s President.

Compensation: The anticipated hiring salary range for this position is $80,000 to $110,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Health Program Officer will be a full-time employee of the Foundation with competitive compensation and benefits, including resources for professional development.
