ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Public Works
In addition, the Public Works Department oversees the operation and maintenance of several County service areas. These County service areas include both water and sewer districts along with road, lighting, and flood maintenance districts.
The Roads Department, part of the Public Works Department, is responsible for maintaining about 1,200 miles of County roadways. The budget unit for Roads is funded solely from federal and state sources.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under close supervision, may perform unskilled or semi-skilled manual, clerical and laboratory work; may assist in studies and prepare written reports; and perform related work as required. May serve in various assignments in a variety of departments.
Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an extra help classification performing a variety of routine support duties for various departments. May assist professional, paraprofessional and technical employees in the performance of their duties. May perform elements of these duties under close supervision. It may serve as a training platform for students and others with temporary employment. Incumbents may receive on-the-job instruction and perform work that will provide practical experience in their desired profession or field of study.
Traffic Control Worker: Provide temporary traffic control for work zones within County right-of-way; perform flagging duties; drive pilot vehicle; receive and communicate specific instructions, clearly, firmly and courteously; be able to move and maneuver quickly; be able to control signaling devices, such as flags and paddles, to provide clear and positive guidance to motorists; understand and apply safe traffic control practices, sometimes in stressful or emergency situations; and recognize dangerous traffic situations and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid injury. Traffic Control Workers will be required to take and pass a certification class provided by the County.
Other Assignments, Departments may assign a wide variety of duties of a nature appropriate to this job description, depending upon the specific business needs of the department.
Knowledge of: Basic principles and concepts of the academic field or trade related to the department to which the employee is assigned;
Ability to: Reason logically, draw sound conclusions and make recommendations. Learn to assist in performing assigned technical functions. May need to gather and analyze data. Understand oral and written instructions. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
May need to compose clear and concise reports.

THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES
Holidays:
12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year.
Vacation:
10 working days a year during the first three years of service; 15 working days a year - 4 through 9 years of service; 17 working days a year - 10 through 15 years of service; 20 working days a year - 16 or more years of service. Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment. For purposes of vacation accrual, a working day is no more than 8 hours.
Sick Leave:
96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual. Employees terminating in good standing after completion of 5 years of continuous service will receive a pro-rata payoff of accumulated sick leave. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement. Note - accrued sick leave may not be used until after three months of employment. Accrued paid leave benefits are used in conjunction with FMLA/CFRA as appropriate.
Bereavement:
Maximum of 24 hours for each non-concurrent death in the immediate family.
Health Plan:
Shasta County contracts with PERS for medical insurance and has an alternative Blue Cross plan. Employees in the Teamsters bargaining unit are insured through a Teamsters Trust plan. Depending on the plan selected, the County pays most, or all, of the employee premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent premium. Contributions are made for a portion of a retiree's insurance premium.
Dental Plan:
The County pays a portion of the employee's and dependents' premium for dental insurance. The employee pays the full premium during the first six months of coverage.
Vision Plan:
The County pays the employee premium and employees may enroll dependents at their own expense.
Life Insurance:
The County pays the premium for life insurance for most employees. The amount of coverage varies by bargaining unit.
Retirement:
The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security (note - not all Safety members' benefits are coordinated with Social Security). Members hired prior to May 8, 2011 are covered under the Safety retirement provisions with a 2% @ 55 benefit. Members hired after May 8, 2011 but before January 1, 2013 are covered under the Safety retirement provisions with a 2% @ 60 benefit. Members hired after January 1, 2013 are covered under the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) with a benefit formula of 2% @ 62. Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.
Please Note – Members hired as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee are covered under the Miscellaneous provisions. Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.
- Deferred Compensation plans available through specified companies.
- IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.
- Optional insurance products are available.
