Salary: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.


Mechanic Positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full-time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.

This position is located in INDOT Fort Wayne.


Role Overview:
An ideal candidate will have a basic foundation of mechanical experience. This role will require you to inspect, diagnose, repair, replace, and test all components of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines while assisting in preventative maintenance for a 62-truck fleet as well as vehicles from cars to 1-ton trucks . Experience in fabricating, welding, and torching is a plus. A high school diploma is required for this position. This position also has a 4-day work week in the summertime, Monday-Thursday and also offers generous vacation, sick, and personal time off. Work is done on an hourly rate not a flat rate.

About the Job:

To perform preventative maintenance and service on cars and light trucks, heavy duty trucks, aerial lift trucks, paving equipment, excavating equipment, tractors, generators, lawn movers, chain saws, weed eaters, pumps, and other motorized equipment as assigned by supervisor. Test drive state vehicle/equipment and other motorized equipment to ensure proper operation after completion of repairs.

A Day in the Life:

  • Supervise other Mechanics on a limited basis;
  • Rebuild, replace and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy duty trucks, and heavyequipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train,mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air and hydraulic brakes);
  • Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes andrepairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydrauliccomponents; ;
  • Install snow plow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies;
  • Perform minor body repair work;
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed onequipment and orders and/or picks up parts;
  • Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten andfabricate metal;
  • Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage;
  • Snow removal when necessary and other related duties as required (e.g., keep garage area,equipment and tools clean and orderly; mow grass; operate snow plow, tow truck or otherequipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintaindaily records of same;
  • Perform service calls on roadside when equipment is disabled.
  • Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings or related meetings;
  • Order and/or pick up parts when required by supervisor;
  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis;
  • Perform other related maintenance duties as assigned by supervisor.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent;
  • Minimum of three years experience in hydraulic maintenance, diagnostics, and repair;
  • Minimum of five years experience in equipment and fleet maintenance;-Extensive knowledge ofand ability to use tools associated with vehicle and motorized equipment repair
  • Working knowledge of appropriate safety practices associated with repair and maintenanceheavy equipment, vehicles and/or motorized equipment;
  • Extensive knowledge of heavy and light duty vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulics and how do properly diagnosis and repair.
  • Ability to repair all types of equipment that is required to perform various types of highway maintenance activities such as snow plowing, paving, chip spreading, excavating, traffic line painting, traffic signal repair, and traffic sign replacement.
  • Skill in operating hand & power tools related to repair & maintenance of vehicles & equipment;
  • Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures;
  • Ability to use welding and steel cutting equipment.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to complete records and reports;
  • Ability to use repair manuals and parts catalogues;
  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly;
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a part of a team;
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time;
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's license or must obtain within 90 days of employment;
  • Must provide own tools and agency approved steel toe boots;
  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team.
