FISH HATCHERY TECHNICIAN

WDFW HATCHERIES DIVISION
GOLDENDALE HATCHERY
Goldendale, Washington – Klickitat County

Anticipated Appointment Length: 4.5 Months
February 16, 2023 – June 30, 2023

With your experience,
you will perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties, and assist with rearing fish.

The optimal applicant leads by example, has a positive can-do attitude, is eager to work hard, and has excellent fish husbandry skills.

You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, and look forward to working with other staff to meet WDFW program goals, answer questions from visitors, and lead tours of the hatchery facilities.

Our Fish Hatchery Technician,

  • Feeds fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as directed.
  • Monitors egg and fish production and disinfects and enumerates eggs.
  • Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling.
  • Assists in inventorying and grading fish populations, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment and incubates for facility programs or shipments.
  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments as directed.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.
  • Performs maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed.
  • Applies herbicides or controlled burning for weed control as directed.
  • Maintains road access to residences, hatchery by plowing, grading, and snow blowers.
  • Reports changes in fish behavior and rearing environments to supervisors.
  • Responds to questions from visitors to the facility and conducts organized tours.
  • Travels to other hatcheries to assist with heavy workloads.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Outside in all weather conditions. Office when the work requires it.
    • Hazards include wet, slick, and uneven work surfaces around bodies of water. Working around heavy equipment ie. Tanker trucks and tractors. Heavy lifting or moving of over 40lbs. Work areas exposed to direct sun, hot and cold work areas.
    • Perform strenuous physical activities, follow instructions and complete assigned tasks, gather and compile data, use sound judgment, and assist in training entry level employees.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30. Some perform 10 days on 4 days off, adjusted by workload.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel as needed to meet work demands.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.
    • Employee will work with hand & power tools, lawn care equipment, egg picking machines, passenger vehicles, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Communicate effectively with public and volunteers.
    • Employee will interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • GED or High School diploma.

License:
  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Six (6) months of experience working at a fish hatchery.
