Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Improve and maintain the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental standards to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Environmental Protection Act, the other government requirements, as well as the company’s Electric policies.
  • Implement and coordinate requirements to ensure compliance for certifying to the ISO 14001:2004 revised standard.
  • Co-chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee; encourage worker input and involvement in a meaningful manner.
  • Review all accident and incident investigation reports and make suggestions to prevent reoccurrence and assist in the development of corrective actions. Conduct secondary investigations in a timely fashion and follow up on outstanding or ineffective corrective actions.
  • Produces monthly analysis of safety documentation and statistics.
  • Actively participate in claims management, including early and safe return to work. Ensure employees are well aware of their responsibilities by cooperating with the return-to-work efforts.
  • Perform environmental monitoring and interpret data, prepare written reports, documenting testing methodology, observations, results and recommendations.
  • Conduct internal health/safety and environmental inspections and audits as prescribed and follow up with the required corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with Management/Engineering to assist with Pre-Start and EHS Reviews, Chemical Management System and Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Act as primary liaison with all governmental agencies concerning environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Monitor new and revised legislative requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in manufacturing meetings to discuss workplace safety and regulatory concerns and opportunities.
  • Champion the annual Management Review Environmental Health and Safety meeting.
  • Conducts orientation with new employees on all health, safety, and environmental compliance.
  • Administer all environmental, health and safety compliance policies and programs, including the regular maintenance of environmental, health and safety Key Measurable Indicators and the related reports.
  • Coordinate and schedule third party audits / inspections, testing and sampling related to health, safety and environmental issues; and maintain updated third-party test results.
  • Develop training content and conduct training on various environmental, health and safety topics for employees, supervisors, and management.
  • Maintain records of third-party contracts relevant to health, safety and environmental issues and legislation
  • Foster good employee relationships and maintain regular shop-floor presence to gain commitment from all employees.
  • Reinforce company’s safety values and the “safety first” mindset to reduce/eliminate incidents and injuries.
  • Perform any other assignments from time-to-time as management directs.

Requirements:

  • University Degree or College Diploma (Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental) or related disciplines.
  • 3+ years of experience in Health, Safety & Environmental within a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, codes and legislative requirements relating to OSHA, CSA, WSIB and the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Hands-on experience in the implementation of several of the environmental and occupational health components within an EHS program.
  • Health and Safety certifications and accreditations (e.g. WHMIS, Working at Heights, Train the Trainer programs, Joint Health and Safety Committee)
  • Behavior-related occupational safety is a central value for you
  • Proficiency in Windows Office Suites.
  • Strong analytical skills needed to analyze and interpret data trends.
  • Excellent communication skills required, in order to appropriately communicate with individuals across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and multiple desired requests.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with all levels within the organization, external government agencies and consultants.
  • Able to collaborate with workers and demonstrate leadership in placing safety as first priority
  • Excellent customer service skills, with a strong focus to fulfill internal and external customer requirements.
  • Practices and maintains integrity while following company’s policies.
  • Ability to develop, influence, and maintain effective relationships across all levels in the organization.
  • Create a positive work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional / technical knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Safety Professional or Certified Safety Professional Certification highly preferred or a willingness to obtain within five years or less.
  • Previous experience implementing ISO 14001
  • Previous experience with hazard mapping assessments
