Hypersonic Aerodynamics Engineer III/IV
Blue Origin’s Engineering & Program Management Flight Sciences group is looking for a talented Aerodynamics Engineer, mid to senior level, to support the New Shepard, New Glenn, Lunar Transportation, and Space Systems Design.
As part of a diverse and hardworking team of specialists, you will be supporting aspects of aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic design across all flight regimes for current and future spaceflight systems. This position will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight and will directly shape the future of space exploration.
Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of airframe and Outer Mold Line (OML) design and configuration
  • Develop tools and tool chains to automated CFD and Wind Tunnel test analyses
  • Develop aerodynamic/aerothermal databases and models
  • Support enterprise-wide aerodynamic process development and training
  • Support/Conduct CFD analyses and Wind Tunnel testing
  • Support Loads development of various vehicles
  • Work with Principal/Chief engineers in defining best practices for aero/aerothermal analyses
  • Be involved in all aspects of the entire program lifecycle: from early conceptual design and configuration through flight operations and sustaining engineering.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • 6+ years of experience with air vehicle aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, or flight mechanics
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of aerodynamic and aerothermal dynamic data for various vehicle configurations
  • Proven experience developing and maintaining databases for use in trajectory, GN&C (Guidance, Navigation, and Control), and structural loads analyses using both analysis and test methods (e.g., hand calcs, CFD, wind tunnel testing)
  • Demonstrated experience with CFD tools including mesh generation and solution post-processing
  • Demonstrated experience with aerodynamic testing and engineering level methods (e.g., Missile DATCOM, MINIVER, Wind Tunnel)
  • Strong programming skills, prefer Matlab and Python
  • Experience in development of integrated systems and effective communication of aerodynamic impacts to other subsystems and product objectives
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Desired:
  • MS or higher degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Strong aerodynamic fundamentals and intuition through multiple flight regimes (subsonic, transonic, hypersonic, continuous and free molecular flow)
  • Experience in aerodynamic tool development and integration with optimization/analysis toolchains
  • Experience with any of these CFD solvers: CFD++, FUN3D CRUNCH, LAURA, VULCAN and pre/post processing tools: Pointwise, Ensight, ParaView, Tecplot
  • Experience in working with CAD geometry for building CFD mesh, performing simulations, and post-processing results
  • Experience supporting wind tunnel testing and, flight testing including data reduction and post-flight data analysis
  • Experience in performing external and internal CFD simulations
  • Performing CFD simulations with multi-species and or multi-phase flows
  • Experience with vehicle aerothermodynamic environments through all phases of flight (launch, exo-atmospheric, re-entry, landing and recovery)
  • Experience developing flight test plans and operational procedures
  • Familiarity with Astrodynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, and Flight Environment Analysis and Modeling
