Duties

This position is being filled as a College Graduate under Public Law 115-232, 5 CFR § 315.614.

  • Recent graduates who have completed a bachelor's or graduate degree within the previous two years.
  • Uniformed service members who have completed a bachelor's or graduate degree and were unable to apply within two years of obtaining their degree due to a uniformed service obligation of at least four years, may apply within two years of their discharge from uniformed service.
Duties GS-1702-07: Presents curriculum-based education programs for diverse, K-post secondary school groups consistent with national and state standards and park interpretive themes. Practices contemporary education methods and techniques to deliver engaging, inquiry-based, and hands-on programs and activities. Adapts programs for audience needs and ensures participant safety. Coordinates with teachers, schools, and organizations to schedule and deliver programs and helps collaborate with partners. Assists with development of curriculum-based programs and supporting materials. Tracks statistics, helps train staff presenting education programs, and assists with program evaluation. Creates teacher guides, social media posts, NPS app content, site bulletins, and other printed and digital content. Assists with planning, organizing, and presenting teacher workshops and youth camps.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
ELIGIBILITY: Recent College Graduate

This appointment will be made under the noncompetitive College Graduate hiring authority. To be eligible an applicant must have received a bachelor's or advanced degree ( i.e., master's, Ph.D., or J.D) within 2 years of applying for employment under this authority. For these purposes, the graduate must have received a baccalaureate or advanced from an institution of higher education in accordance with section 101(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as codified at 20 U.S.C. 1001(a). In the case of an applicant who has completed a period of no less than four years of intervening obligated uniform service, they must apply within than two years of release or discharged from that uniformed service.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/26/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Being a park guide or tour leader; conducts independent research to develop and present both on and off-site programming; initiates and maintains formal collaborative relationships with diverse academic community; Prepare various educational presentations and written documents. You must include hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: The work requires stamina and fitness for long periods of outdoor activity, including hiking on rough or steep ground and uneven trails, management of school groups that may exceed 100 students, standing and speaking to large groups. Lifting and carrying supplies and teaching gear requires the ability to manage loads of at least 25 pounds. Travel requires using park vehicles. The work may be occasionally stressful due to occasionally high numbers of students, complex staffing arrangements, and logistical complexities.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Programs are conducted in all seasons of the year, and in a large range of weather and environmental conditions, including summer rain, snow, cold, and summer heat. Office work is typically sedentary, involving sitting and using a computer in a modern office environment. Work will also be performed in classrooms or visitors center.
