This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 28 hours per week), seasonal (April – September) Education Project Assistant position for Oregon Sea Grant at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center serves the people of Oregon, the nation, and worldwide through research, education and extension that promotes the wise use of the ocean and its resources. Oregon Sea Grant administrates the outreach and education programs and the Visitor Center at HMSC. The Visitor Center encourages adults and children to enjoy marine science through a variety of exhibits and displays. These interactive exhibits and aquaria showcase marine research and highlight our unique coastal environment. Research conducted by HMSC scientists reflects the search for knowledge used to understand, manage, and sustain marine resources. The anticipated season is April through September.

Position Duties
50% Assist with the daily operations in the Visitor Center, turning on and off exhibits, troubleshooting exhibits, opening and closing procedures, exhibit cleaning, stocking reference materials and brochures, communicating the daily updates and priorities to volunteers.

20% Staff the greeter and interpretive positions with the assistance of the volunteer corp.
Interpret the exhibits and aquaria, assist visitors at the touch tanks, answer questions, ensure that exhibits are operating correctly. Provide customer service to the public and assist individual inquiries.

20% Lead regularly scheduled interpretive presentations and tours for the public.
10% Cover cashier register duties for staff breaks and days off
Minimum Qualifications

Education, training, or experience sufficient to perform the duties required by the specific research, extension, or other educational project; AND Knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to obtain, provide, or exchange information. Some positions may require skill in typing (proficiency level based on individual position requirements).

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • A basic knowledge base and understanding of marine science.
  • Exercise professionalism, sound judgment and proactively problem-solve.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position will include working weekends and holidays. Requires working with volunteers and the public of all ages in a very busy environment. Requires working in cold salt water and hands on contact with marine animals. Physical duties involve standing, walking around the Visitor Center for exhibit operation, troubleshooting, dusting and cleaning all exhibits, and organizing materials. As well as operating an online reservation system and help with onsite register/credit card transactions when needed.
This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
