Scope of Job
To oversee the daily operations of the translation and interpreting office and provide specialized professional skills in planning and executing complex translation and interpreting projects for the University or external clients.

Description of Duties
  • Responsible for managing all translating, editing, proof-reading publications and documents from English to Spanish, including online materials in order to meet deadlines and quality standards for the University.
  • Plans, directs and reviews all activities and operations of the translation and interpreting office.
  • Coordinates complex translation projects involving additional translators within the University or external agencies.
  • Supervises translation and interpreting staff, negotiates translation budgets and terms of services with external parties.
  • Responsible for all budgetary responsibilities for the translation and interpreting office.
  • Plans and seeks sources of revenue.
  • Plans and schedules all translation services, including administrative supervision of all assigned staff.
  • Communicates regularly with internal and external groups.
  • Liaises with departments and units for the publishing of websites, leaflets and materials.
  • Approves final versions of Spanish language materials.
  • Negotiates estimates and projects with external clients and seeks the establishment of a regular source of revenue.
  • Translates routine and complex publications and documents from English into Spanish (and occasionally vice-versa) including online materials to meet deadlines and quality standards for the university.
  • Reviews and revises the translations of individual print and online texts produced by staff and translators and other members of the team to ensure the quality and consistency of Spanish materials.
  • Edits and proofreads individual print and online publications to ensure the quality and consistency of materials in Spanish.
  • Designs and supervises organizational flow for complex projects: determines assignments, deadlines, work distribution and project priorities.
  • Ultimate responsible person for the establishment and growth of a bilingual terminological pool for the institution at several levels.
  • Oversees and conducts the maintenance, renewal and annual license purchase of specialized translation software.
  • Oversees and participates in the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff.
  • Plans and handles the decision making process of complex translation projects.
  • Occasionally assists in the simultaneous or consecutive interpreting at university events as required.
  • Seeks professional development opportunities for staff. Integrates student interns in the workflow of the Translation and Interpreting Office and assigns tasks in coordination with the Translation and Interpreting Programs.
  • Liaises with Translation and Interpreting Academic programs in the supervision and review of highly specialized projects.
  • Collaborates with Executive Director and Associate Director of the B3 Institute (Bilingual, Biliterate, Bicultural) in establishing appropriate policies for the bilingual vision of the institution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting, Spanish or other closely related degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education
Master’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting.

Licenses/Certifications
None.

Required Experience
Four (4) years of professional related experience, including experience as a professional translator/interpreter/reviser and/ or experience in Translation Project Management / Translation Agency. Must be able to speak, read and write in English and Spanish fluently and be able to edit and proof printed and online materials to the highest publishing standards in Spanish.

Preferred Experience
Experience in the translation of promotional and advertising materials. Ability to understand linguistic variation in the Spanish-Speaking world and to produce and revise texts in Spanish that are functional locally, regionally and internationally. High proficiency in the use of Translation Software (SDL Trados Preferred).

Equipment
Use of standard office equipment. Mastery of computer-assisted translation tools, advanced word processing, terminological management software, webpage editing, and localization tools. High proficiency in the use of Translation Software (SDL Trados Preferred).

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required to serve in a multi-campus institution. Project-based environment that requires meeting deadlines and work in an ever-changing and fast paced environment.
