The opportunity


EY’s Global Data Office is seeking a Data Scout to explore and evaluate new public, commercial and internal data sources to enable the Data Office to continue to uncover and support use of desirable data requested by the Firm. New sources are key to many of EY’s service areas and can be used to continually confirm and improve data-driven insights and services offered in support of EY clients.


This is a key role to support the growth of reusable data within a larger, multi-national organization. Being at the center of data will require you to have a strong knowledge of data, solid investigative skills and an understanding of data evaluation.


This position is a member of the Enterprise Data Management (Data Sourcing) team, which is part of EY’s Data Office. This position is part of a global, virtually dispersed team that executes the external content sourcing strategy for EY’s service lines, markets, sectors, and the enterprise.

Your key responsibilities


Describes the core purpose of the role and how time is spent across the most important responsibilities. Presents challenges, problems to solve, what you’ll learn etc. Also possibly covers location and travel.


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing distinctive services to the EY community to discover and leverage new sources of data
  • Mapping of domains of interest to EY’s stakeholders and practitioners to provide new and leading opportunities to create value through data.
  • Researching new public, internal and third-party commercial data sources based on demand
  • Analyzing potential data sources and vendors for quality and business fit as part of initial acquisition of data
  • Collaborating and maintaining our Data Catalog, known as Data Explorer, to foster data reuse
  • Sponsoring and collaborating on initial use cases and pipelines for ingestion into EY environments to capture initial value of acquired data.


Skills and attributes for success


  • Ability to effectively work with internal stakeholders to understand and support their data needs and priorities
  • Ability to proactively search for and evaluate data sources of all types (commercial, open source and internal)
  • Ability to work and team with a multitude of different people - including business customers, Functional managers, IT project managers and IT engineers - to balance demands
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to work independently and focus on priorities identified
  • A self-starter attitude
  • English language skills - excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to provide timely, through leadership content
  • Natural explorer and curious mind
  • Comfortable with timely responses to queries and assignments
  • Comfortable using Powerpoint, Word & Excel
  • Data Scouting experience is desirable
  • Experience interpreting and working with data catalogs, data dictionaries, and sample data files to determine value, accuracy and relevance as well as familiarity with delivery methods (data feeds, API, cloud, etc.)
  • Eagerness to execute with a sense of urgency and at times through ambiguity requiring keen decision making
  • Experience with building or working with data category taxonomies is a plus


To qualify for the role you must have


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in data scouting, data evaluation, data analytics or related functions
  • Experience working with Data Scientists and Data Analysts
  • Some experience with BI tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, Spotfire) is a plus
  • Experience in data wrangling using Excel/SQL/Python for data profiling is a plus
  • Knowledge of basic concepts and approaches for data profiling and management


Ideally, you’ll also have


  • Light travel may be required pending business and project needs
  • Working hours, flexible work arrangements and time off may be limited during specific times or deadlines
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate workload and multiple time zones as needed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to display a range of communication approaches for diverse community needs skills and to talk about programs in a clear, compelling manner with professional/executive presence

The compensation ranges below are provided in order to comply with United States pay transparency laws. Other geographies will follow their local salary guidelines, which may not be a direct conversion of published US salary range/s.
We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The salary range for this job in most geographic locations in the US is $80,800 to $146,600. The salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $96,900 to $166,600. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options. Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
