Budget Title: Instructional Support Associate (SL-2)

Salary: $40,000 (10-month, college-year appointment)

Perform the duties of the costume shop assistant in the costume shop teaching, constructing costumes, creating supporting paperwork under the supervision of the Costume Shop Manager and the Costume Designer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise preparation of patterns, fabrics, costumes, accessories and props necessary for review by Costume Designer for all Main Stage Productions.
  • Construct, alter and maintain costumes as needed for Theater Department productions, in collaboration with the Costume Designer and Director of the production.
  • Supervise graduate assistants and student workers in all aspects of costume construction; while constructing costumes, maintaining safe work habits and guiding related processes in the execution of theater department productions.
  • Help teach students wardrobe and supervise student wardrobe functions prior to and during dress rehearsals and performances.
  • Teach a 4 credit Theatre class in Costume Construction one semester per year.
  • Help maintain costume shop tools, facilities and related work spaces and guide students to do the same.
  • Guide students in the maintenance of two stock rooms - organizing, tagging, replacing stock as it is used and returned.
  • Consult with Theatre students in the development and execution of the design of costumes for departmental studio productions.
  • Assist Costume Designer and Shop Supervisor with evaluation of students at the end of every semester.
  • Inventory and order supplies semi-annually.
  • Maximize student learning, skill acquisition, and usefulness, while treating students with respect and kindness.
  • Help purchase materials as needed and implement safe money handling as instructed.
  • Help execute safety procedures and decisions.
  • Help build an inclusive learning environment
  • Attend all relevant meetings helping represent the Costume area.
  • Complete all shows in a timely manner and at stated level of quality.
  • Supervise planning and execution responsibility for dismantling costume set up, cleaning and restocking costumes as well as show maintenance.

Job Requirements:

  • Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience serving underrepresented or ethnic minority student populations and/or working in a diverse university like that of Binghamton. Knowledge and understanding of multicultural and diversity issues.
  • Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite).
  • Formal training in costume construction: patterning, cutting, stitching.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • 3 years of professional level experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders
  • Valid/clean driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.

Preferred:

  • Costume related skills of any other kind.
  • MFA in Theatrical Costume.
  • Teaching experience.
