Job Title: Custodial Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Facilities and Services
Title of Manager/Supervisor: Custodial Manager

Position Summary: Assist in the supervision and coordination of custodial activities. Monitor, and
approve time cards for employees under the Custodial Manager’s direction. Conduct inspections and
monitor work performance of employees in designated areas to ensure completion of work
assignments. Coordinate, approve, and ensure coverage of all vacation requests and other absences.
Recommend and participate in disciplinary action under the Custodial manager’s supervision. Perform
yearly employee performance evaluations. This is a highly customer service oriented position in which
employees should strive to exceed customer expectations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to supervise a custodial team to maintain the facilities of the University
  • Assist in the assignment and scheduling of custodial duties
  • Assist in planning and supervising the custodial staff
  • Provides the Custodial Manager and the Director of Facilities and Services with performance reviews of custodial staff
  • Participate in the hiring and training of custodial staff on the proper operation of cleaning equipment, tools and cleaning chemicals
  • Serve as a liaison with students, faculty, administrators and support personnel in discussing needs and/or problems relating to custodial services
  • Assist with disciplinary letters and disciplinary action plans
  • Assist in the purchase of cleaning materials and equipment that are used to maintain campus buildings
  • Assist in the replacement of broken or damaged furniture; inspect mattresses and damaged bed springs
  • Recommend maintenance repairs needed in dorms, apartments, and other university buildings
  • Investigate all of your staffs accidents, the employees and witnesses that were involved, and the accident site. Identify cause of accident and document corrective action. Complete and submit your accident investigation report within eight hours of learning of the accident
  • Perform life safety inspections
  • Ability to gain general knowledge of the campus
  • Perform duties and make decisions in keeping with the Clarkson Values
  • Learn new equipment operation as required by changes in the processes within the custodial area
  • Live out the Clarkson University values in all daily activities
  • Learn new custodial techniques as required to remain up-to-date with current and new technologies/legal requirements as applicable
  • Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping
  • Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices and/or student workers
  • Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet job specific and University standards
  • Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use. Be responsible for care, cleanliness, and maintenance of assigned vehicle and report all vehicle concerns to appropriate supervisor immediately
  • Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy (i.e. speed limits)
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described within the job description
  • Performance of above duties require you to be at work
  • Assist with other projects, administrative duties, and initiatives as assigned

Essential Skills:

  • Perform a variety of cleaning, servicing and stocking duties in University buildings, offices, and laboratories
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment and products.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage staff and to establish and maintain effective working relationship to diverse constituencies and accomplish written and oral directions is necessary
  • Must be able to plan, coordinate, and assign work schedules.
  • Must have the capability to plan, coordinate, analyze, execute, and document specific administrative and management functions with long-term goals in mind.
  • Computer literacy and a working knowledge of floor plans.
  • Communication and planning skills
  • Knowledge to repair large custodial equipment (i.e. floor scrubbers, floor sweepers)
  • Working knowledge of APPA custodial standards
  • Proficient in custodial duties and computer programs as applicable
  • Must have enthusiasm for the job, a customer service approach and be willing to work in a team environment
  • Hold a valid NYS driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to meet the University insurance standards
  • Proficient mathematical skills
  • Problem solving and analytical skills
  • Possess general knowledge of the campus layout and building locations
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies
  • Provide clear written and oral directions related to work/projects as applicable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Education:
Minimal Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or work experience equivalent

Experience:
Minimal Experience:

  • Four (4) years of supervisory experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience

  • Ability to lift and move heavy items weighing up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Endurance sufficient to maintain routine discomfort from exposure to moderate levels heat, cold, and moisture.
