  • JOB SUMMARY
      The outpatient Crisis Specialist is responsible for evaluating and assessing the mental health and/or substance use of the patient at the time of crisis in emergency room, an office setting or over the phone. This is accomplished face to face in the emergency room, medical floor, or by appointment. Some of the information may be obtained via phone. This employee will act as the gate keeper to the behavioral health continuum of care both internally and externally. They must provide accurate, detailed information to physicians, other medical professions, units and facilities outside the Thomas Health System. This includes insurance companies, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, and rehabilitation providers. An extensive knowledge of resources is essential. This person must possess good decision making skills
      and the ability to render an accurate preliminary diagnosis. They must possess the confidence to discuss sensitive issues and advocate for their patient. Other duties include: completing mental hygiene petitions, testifying in court hearings, and working with crisis workers from other agencies. They must have excellent communication skills to assist others in crisis situations both via phone and in person.
      Crisis Specialists also work with the patients going to the intensive outpatient program, completing BH-1 assessments, complete their admission to the outpatient program, getting their insurance precertification, and working closely with nursing homes for admissions.
  • EDUCATION
    • Must have completed an educational program and have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, (and or other Health Related fields) or possess WV licensure as a registered nurse.
    • Initial and continuing education as required by discipline.
  • LICENSURE
    • None required.
  • EXPERIENCE
    • Prior experience in crisis intervention (preferred).
    • Preferred experience in working with the mentally ill/chemical dependency population.
    • Preferred experience with the geriatric population.
    • Preferred experience in crisis intervention and must be familiar with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness 4th edition, revised. (DSM 5).
    • Strong organizational and customer service skills as demonstrated by prior work experience preferred.

  • COMPUTER/TYPING/MATH SKILLS
    • Must have basic knowledge of computer skills so that the employee can effectively receive training on the hospital computer system.
  • JOB SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and customer skills.
    • Requires strong organizational skills.
    • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Must be able to communicate with all internal and external customers on the telephone directly and in writing.
    • Must be able to relay factual information to physicians.
    • Must have knowledge of community resources as it relates to assessment and referral services.
