We are offering an opportunity to appoint 4 people to join our team on a Fixed Term basis:

  • 2 for 24 months full time.
  • 1 for 12 months full time.
  • 1 for 24 months part time.

There is a possibility that some/all of these roles may become permanent.


About The Role

The Coroner's Office is very busy and the nature of work can at times be difficult and demanding as such applicants will require a high level of personal resilience.

Coroners Officers investigate deaths referred to the service on behalf of the Senior Coroner and also investigate Treasure finds that are discovered within Lincolnshire.

This is an integral role which involves:

  • Daily liaison with bereaved families, medical professionals, mortuary staff, police officers, pathologists, funeral directors and other agencies,
  • the preparation of evidence files for the Coroner.
  • occasional attendance at Inquest Hearings as Court Usher, supporting families and assisting the Coroner in the smooth running of the Inquest.
  • Liaising with Local Authority finds officer and potentially The British Museum in relation to Treasure finds.

There will be occasions when the post holder will need to attend to view a body for identification purposes with family members. This role will be predominantly office based in Lincoln.

Although the main role of the Coroners office is to establish; Who, When Where and How a death occurred, there is also a strong focus on preventative measures for the future.

About The Team

The Coroner’s Service comprises of a Senior Coroner, an Area Coroner and 5 Assistant Coroners, all Coroner’s are Solicitors with at least 5 years’ experience.

The Service is run by the Coroner’s Service Manager supported by a Coroner’s Development Officer and a Senior Coroner’s Officer. There are currently 10 Coroner’s Officers who carry out investigations and enquires working a hybrid system from the office but also on occasions from home, there is also a Business Support team of 5. 3 Court Ushers working on a Relief basis have also been employed to run the Courts and help relieve the Coroner’s Officers to assist the Coroner.

Due to the increase in referrals and cases going to Inquest it is intended to increase the staffing levels to 14 Coroner’s Officers.

The Team works predominantly on their own but there is an excellent comradery and officers help and support each other, there are regular team meetings to run through any issues or concerns.

About You

We are looking for a professional individual to join us in providing an empathic and timely service to the residents of Lincolnshire.

To be effective in this role, you will possess the following key skills and personal attributes:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer care skills.
  • Proven IT skills, with an ability to learn new and be-spoke systems quickly.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and comply with coronial law.
  • Empathetic.
  • Personally resilient.

Medical knowledge would be an advantage although not essential.

Potential applicants should be aware that there may be a requirement for the post holder to work out of hours as part of an on-call rota.

A full driver's licence is essential and Police Vetting and enhanced DBS checks will be required.
