Job Summary

The Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) is the leading organization at the forefront of Planetary Health, a dynamic and rapidly growing global field and social movement focused on the human health impacts of our disruption and the transformation of Earth's natural systems. Never before has humanity's footprint on the natural world been so large or so threatening to human health and well-being. The PHA is a global consortium of over 340 institutions in 60+ countries with a focus on rapidly expanding our understanding of, and ability to address, these threats through engagement with policy makers, private sector and the general public. The PHA is housed within the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA.

The PHA seeks a detail-oriented and motivated Communications Coordinator to support the PHA team in building an activated global community dedicated to advancing the field of Planetary Health and promoting the presence and impact of Planetary Health’s transdisciplinary science, stories, and solutions in mainstream media, to the general public, private sector, and policy makers. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Communications Manager to assist with implementing a communications and branding strategy and optimizing all aspects of PHA’s programs and special projects through effective messaging. The Communications Coordinator will frequently work in collaboration with cross-cultural teams of Regional Hub leaders, international fellows, interns, campus ambassadors, and relevant partners and vendors as needed, and should have curiosity and interest in the field of Planetary Health.

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Developing and maintaining the PHA brand, keeping an evolving assessment and awareness of trends and external landscapes.
  • Drafting and editing communications copy and material for internal and external audiences in accordance with PHA branding, strategy, policy, and guidelines; including but not limited to writing, graphics, video, and photography. Regularly liaising with team members and identified partners for reporting, content creation, and amplification.
  • Overseeing the development and creation of content including newsletters, social media posts, blog entries, news releases, presentations or other informational resources and materials.
  • Ensuring the highest quality of the PHA online presence including maintenance of its website and social media pages and profiles; implementation of timely updates reflecting current events, programs, initiatives, opportunities, and membership.
  • Facilitating online engagement and digital strategy across multiple platforms through monitoring and response.
  • Evaluating campaign and project performance and recommending adjustments through regular tracking and reporting of analytics, exposure, and activity.
  • Maintaining calendars and appointments and providing relevant administrative support, including for virtual and in-person events.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of 1 year from date of hire with the possibility of extension. This is a hybrid position and this position will be based in Boston, MA. Additional detail pertaining to this position will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, California (exempt staff only), Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington).

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • Understanding of the established principles and concepts within public relations, strategic communication, media relations, and digital strategy.
  • Knowledge of various social media platforms including LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Proficiency with design and video editing software such as Photoshop, InDesign, PremierePro, and/or Canva.
  • Previous work with international organizations and audiences.
  • Knowledge, experience and/or interest and deep curiosity in the area of global environmental change and/or public health as it relates to Planetary Health.
  • Experience with academic and journalistic writing, including use of Associated Press style.
  • Utilization of accessible design principles and familiarity creating for multicultural, multilingual audiences.
  • Proficiency with communications software such as Mailchimp, Buffer, website CMS.
  • Proficiency with office management software such as Google Suite, Zoom, Click-Up, Microsoft Office.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Organizational skills and the aptitude to multitask in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects.
  • Creative and innovative self-starter.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and works collaboratively across disciplines, cultures, and geographies.
  • Keen attention to detail and deadlines.
