Description:

The Nurse Manager, Patient Care Services for the 6 North Medical ICU and Medical PCU serves as a member of the Ministry Organization’s nursing leadership team. Responsible for day-to-day operations, scheduling, staffing and providing 24/7 accountability for patient care delivery, planning, and evaluation of services. Participates in and supports strategic development and outcomes management of nursing clinical areas.

Provides clinical and administrative leadership for planning, organizing, directing, monitoring and evaluating safe, superior and preeminent quality patient care to ensure the advancement of clinical practice and patient care for a nursing unit.

The Trinity Health Ann Arbor 6 North Unit is comprised of a 20-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and a 12-bed Medical Progessive Care Unit. The MICU provides services to older adolescent, adult, and older adult cardiac patients, acute and chronic Heart Failure patients, as well as medical/surgical patients who require cardiac monitoring. Services are provided to critically ill adult patient. Patients in the unit require frequent and close assessment, skillful and timely clinical interventions and sophisticated technical support to achieve aggressive treatment goals. Majority of the patients within the unit have pulmonary diagnoses. Other common diagnoses are gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis, neurologic events and diabetic ketoacidosis. The MPCU services patients with a variety of complex medical conditions, including DKA, sepsis, and pulmonary disease.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree required. Appropriate master's degree in nursing, Business or Health Administration preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years clinical nursing or leadership experience at the unit level in a related health care setting.

  • Licensure: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with and supports director and key leaders, groups and stakeholder audiences in the development and implementation of operational plans, goals and objectives.

  • Serves as a member of the nursing leadership team to participate in the development of the nursing strategic plan, short and long term goals and objectives, standards of care and operating plans for the assigned clinical area(s).

  • Collaborates with members of the inter-professional team and unit staff in the development, implementation, and monitoring of unit operating and capital budgets.

  • Develops, implements, and manages ongoing measurement, action planning, and evaluation methods related to all dimensions of performance inclusive of colleague engagement, patient and family experience, workplace safety, healthy work environments, clinical outcome and financial performance targets for the assigned clinical area(s).

  • Develops, implements, and monitors plans related to education and required competencies, orientation, retention, cultural competence, conflict management, and coaching of colleagues to ensure safe, quality, patient care for the assigned clinical area(s).

  • Ensures the recruitment, retention, development, mentoring and succession planning of engaged patient care colleagues within the assigned clinical area(s). Develops, promotes, and implements an environment of shared leadership and decision making.

  • Participates in evaluating, selecting and integrating health care technology and information systems that support patient care.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing and inter-professional team members, facilitates, develops, directs, manages, and monitors the implementation of effective evidence-based programs, policies, and protocols, to measure, analyze and continuously improve the safety and quality of patient care in the assigned clinical area(s).

  • Communicates and collaborates on a regular basis with nursing leaders, colleagues, inter-professional team about achievements and concerns related to patient safety, quality, patient loyalty, colleague engagement, and satisfaction. Develops and implements action plans to address concerns.

  • Participates in SJM Hospital's decision-making workgroups to implement improvement changes within the organization.

  • Ensures compliance with all healthcare standards and requirements established by various licensing, regulatory, and accreditation bodies. Maintains a working knowledge of Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Programs, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Trinity Health.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of the electronic medical record and other advanced health care technologies.

  • Understanding of the health care environment and all applicable laws and regulations Ability to synthesize and interpret clinical, quality, and financial data.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of system thinking, change leadership, shared governance, matrix reporting, continuous improvement and financial and productivity management.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all members of the health care team. Displays strong interpersonal and communication skills to provide mentoring and coaching to managers and colleagues.

  • Demonstrated creative and innovative problem solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to model the use of evidence-based leadership/practice, and project management skills.
