Job Summary:

The Client-Based Researcher III will work to direct the development of research methodologies and procedures according to specific researcher and principal investigator objectives and specifications for one or more complex research projects. This role entails leading development, design, technical operations, and compliance, including design and conduct of workflows and consenting of human subjects for biospecimen collections, and documentation of related data according to established policies and procedures. The employee will prepare critical reports and materials and disseminate information to appropriate entities. These reports include inventory data, and compiling bibliographies and other critical data that support core grant and other funding needs. This position will require reviewing new workflows for new translational research projects and clinical trials, editing accordingly and ensuring they align with IRB-approved activities and hospital regulations. As part of their role, this position supervises day-to-day operations of the BioBank lab and may supervise others including student lab assistants. They will also assist in providing information and representing the interests of the BioBank to internal and external stakeholder groups. The successful candidate will report and work directly with the BioBank assistant director to ensure smooth operation of the BioBank program. This includes project intake, developing and editing new protocols, and developing and implementing workflows in coordination with various entities. Excellent coordination by this lead role with the rest of the lab staff is expected in order to ensure efficient, coordinated and accurate operations within the BioBank program and with other departments. The employee will primarily be responsible for managing staff activity. This includes ensuring sufficient coverage of daily workload, coordinating daily needs of the lab, ensuring sufficient staffing, ordering supplies and ensuring freezers and equipment are in good status.

This position will work closely with faculty pathologists, pathology trainees, pathologist assistants, operating room personnel, and other physicians and scientists. Additionally, this position will assure that all clinical and laboratory research activity adheres to Federal, University of Wisconsin, and UWCCC policies, procedures and requirements.

Responsibilities:
Leads a research team, designs methodology, conducts data collection and analysis, and prepares reports for client-based research. Authors publications, presents research, and may supervise staff.

  • 5% Leads the development, design, technical operations, and compliance for one or more research projects. Designs and conducts experiments and interviews. Documents results according to established policies and procedures
  • 20% Prepares reports and materials and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 10% Reviews and edits research protocols independently
  • 10% Participates in research publishing, editing committee meetings, and informational presentations to contribute to the development of (research type)
  • 30% Supervises day-to-day operations of a research unit and may supervise others within a specialized laboratory or research area
  • 5% Serves as a subject matter expert and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing information and representing the interests of the unit

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience with day-to-day research lab operations for at least 5 years.
  • Experience with direct handling/processing of primary human biospecimens.
  • Experience in coordinating a team to ensure efficient and successful operations of day-to-day activities.
  • Experience with quality assurance and good laboratory practices.
  • Experience with billing (e.g. iLabs) and managing finances in a cost-effective manner.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with biospecimen-management databases (e.g. OnCore) is preferred, including data entry, maintenance and generating reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

- BioBank Core hours: 7:30am - 5:30pm. Schedule: with work both at Highland Avenue, TAC, Madison Surgery Center and the future East Park Medical Center planned to be open in Fall 2024, Some weekends, holidays and evening hours required and expected.

  • Access to a vehicle. Travel is required. Must provide own transportation or a valid driver's license and eligibility for Car Fleet usage is necessary.
