Penn GSE is looking for a Chief of Staff to help support the strategic goals and mission for the school. Reporting to the Dean of Penn GSE, the Chief of Staff serves as a critical advisor and member of the school’s senior management team, responsible for working with the Dean and GSE leadership to strategize, implement, and move forward the priorities of the Dean and school. The Chief of Staff provides high-level support to the Dean on a variety of strategic and operational projects and activities that are critical to the school as a whole. These will include (but are not limited to) projects and activities that help to highlight and strengthen the school’s academic programs, structure school operations for maximum impact, and foster successful engagement and relationships with a variety of internal and external partners from across the school, the university, and the larger local, state, and global communities. The successful candidate will help sustain an effective support structure for an integrated senior leadership team, will deftly handle confidential matters, and will help foster a culture of inclusion, excellence, and stakeholder impact.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
  • Works with the Dean to implement and manage a variety of strategic and operational projects that are of the utmost importance to the school.
  • Manages at least one staff member and oversees the planning and execution of Dean’s office events.
  • Works with the Senior Leadership Team to make sure that tasks are carried forward and that activities are coordinated. This includes organizing SLT meetings, committees, etc.
  • Acts as a point of contact between senior staff and other GSE staff and stakeholders.
  • Works with senior leadership to coordinate communications from the Dean.
  • Provides strategic guidance and advice to the Dean.
  • Acts as a point of contact between administrative staff, faculty, University officials and employees.
  • Represents the Dean when necessary both internally and externally.
  • Works in conjunction with the Dean and senior leadership to foster engagement and relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree and a minimum of five to seven years’ of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have the acumen to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, balancing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands.
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize work, and manage multiple and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with highly confidential information and act as a liaison between the dean and other constituencies, both internal and external.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work efficiently in a demanding environment.
  • Must be highly detail oriented.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of individuals. Must be able to interact positively and productively with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and constituencies.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and experience communicating with a wide range of professionals involved in education, including both professionals in the field and academics.
  • Must exhibit a high degree of tact and diplomacy, and a strong sense of discretion.
  • This is not a 9-5 position so the Chief of Staff must have some flexibility in their schedule.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
