Job description

The Central Sterile Technician is responsible for cleaning, assembling and sterilizing and/or reprocessing all equipment, supplies and instruments according to regulatory requirements and industry standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and checks instruments and supplies for cases by sterilizing the supplies and equipment necessary for each procedure.
  • Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.
  • Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains an orderly system for accomplishing the required level of instrument preparation, maintenance and distribution.
  • Order supplies and maintain equipment.
  • Follow safety procedures and manufacturer’s instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies and equipment.
  • Assemble all instrument procedure trays, packs and carts following prescribed manner.
  • Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads.
  • Oversee the quality standard for handling and storing of materials and supplies used for sterile processing services and functions.
  • Assists with keeping processes and policies updated and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates and promotes compliance to infection control, legal, ethical and safety hazards.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Demonstrates clear ownership of workplace and patient safety.
  • Reports mistakes, near misses, adverse events and quality and safety concerns.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of safety and quality improvement activities.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Certification/Licensure: CRCST Certification by IAHCSMM or CBSPD required within 6 months of hire.

Experience: Two years’ experience in sterile processing in a hospital environment preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure. Must be proficient in reading and writing.

Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend, stoop, reach and pull. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 lbs. Good visual acuity.
