Providence St. Joseph Health is calling an Associate Codder to work remotely within our footprint states: AK, CA, MT, OR, TX and/or WA.

The Associate Coder is responsible for the coding/abstracting of acute-care services within ORC responsibility. This is an entry-level position and coding and abstracting work types may include Clinic and ED facility professional fee accounts.

Responsibilities:

  • Reads and interprets documents contained in the medical record to identify and code all relevant diagnoses and procedures by utilizing an encoder program, and following national and PHS ORC coding guidelines, Coding Clinic, and other appropriate coding references and tools to ensure proper code assignment.
  • Selects principal diagnoses and procedures in accordance with coding and UHDDS standards, CMS requirements, and knowledge of prospective payment systems. Ensures that correct MS DRG is assigned for proper hospital reimbursement. Ensures that APR DRG severity of illness and risk of mortality values are accurate for reporting purposes.
  • Queries physicians for clarification when conflicting or ambiguous information is present by following appropriate PHS procedures.
  • Assigns Present on Admission (POA) indicator accurately for each diagnoses coded, per CMS requirements published in official ICD-CM coding guidelines, and if uncertain, queries the physician.
  • Accurately assigns discharge disposition code, paying particular attention to post-transfer program DRGs for proper hospital reimbursement.
  • Abstracts medical record information in compliance with CMS requirements and PHS abstracting procedures. Uses available tools to check entries for accuracy. This may include data for clinical studies and quality management activities.
  • Communicates with coding support staff regarding changes in patient type, canceled admissions, incorrectly indexed reports, and missing sections of charts to ensure complete and accurate coding as well as correct billing of Medicare, insurance companies, and patients.
  • Performs follow up tasks, may be included but not limited to:
  • Finalizing incomplete coding when requested reports or answered physician queries become available.
  • Reviewing and responding to QI review coordinator recommendations on all assigned charts.
  • Completing 72 hour/24 hour bundle requests within specified time frames.
  • Remains informed of office policies and changes in coding practice and regulatory information. Comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and requirements as well as PH&S policies and procedures in all aspects of job performance. Promptly incorporates required changes into work activities.
  • Attends and participates in coding section meetings and training sessions.
  • Completes AHIMA-mandated continuing education credits and keeps coding credential current as applicable.
  • Contributes to team efforts to meet coverage, processing, and quality standards by being cooperative, responsible, and positive. Shares new information with others in the department.
  • Promote PH&S as a premier service organization by treating customers with compassion and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient demographic, medical, and financial information, ensuring proper handling and disposal of confidential documents and adherence to HIPAA.

Required qualifications:

  • Completion of Medical Terminology and A&P (approved)
  • Enrollment in an AHIMA-accredited Health Information Technology program or online coding program
  • Proven history of proactively identifying, resolving and escalating issues that impact business and documentation outcomes
  • Track record showing good decision-making skills based upon a mixture of analysis, experience, and judgment
  • Track record in organizing and planning with demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and achieve results in a fast paced environment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology
  • Graduate of an AHIMA-accredited Health Information Technology program or self-study course and a passing score on the national certification examination for RHIA or RHIT
  • AAPC or AHIMA coding-related credential upon hire
  • 1 year HIM background/experience or equivalent experience working in health care setting or clerical/office setting
  • Epic experience
