The Assistant Patient Care Director is responsible for direction of the nursing unit (s) in coordination with the patient care director in concert with the goals of that unit according to the philosophy of the Division of Patient care Services. The responsibility includes unit administration, direct nursing care and coordinating activities with ancillary departments. The assistant patient care director reports to the patient care director. An advanced competency level, knowledge of the nursing process, and consistently meeting or exceeding all criteria of the staff nurse performance appraisal tool is expected of assistant patient care directors.

The CVICU is a 6-bed unit that cares for critically ill pre- and post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patients, utilizing technologies including mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pump and Impella, temporary epicardial pacing, and more. CVSD is an 8-bed unit that cares for patients downgraded from CVICU, post TAVR patients, other thoracic and vascular surgeries. These units use a modified universal model, with many nurses being cross-trained between both patient populations in order to flex with unit census.

Qualifications:

  • RN Licensure with Reciprocity in the state of Virginia or Compact State
  • BLS for the Healthcare Provider CPR
  • ACLS
  • One year of relevant Healthcare/Medical/Nursing/Patient Care experience and demonstrated leadership ability

Duties:

  • In collaboration with other members of unit leadership team, manage day-to-day unit operations, staffing, and patient flow.
  • Serve as first-line resource to bedside nursing staff, providing support and clinical guidance as needed.
  • Collaborate with unit educator to identify and address unit educational needs.
  • Monitor unit quality performance related to nurse-sensitive indicators and promote quality of care initiatives tailored to unit needs.
  • Represent unit on hospital-wide committees and initiatives.
  • Identify potential process improvement needs and actively participates in resolution through communication and education of staff.
  • Assure quality of care and services by adhering to industry standards and measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and benchmarks established by the organization.
  • Maintain unit’s high-performing patient experience scores through daily rounding on patients and coaching of unit staff, addressing service concerns as they arise.
