Position Overview: AFRL/EN Support

We are seeking an Airworthiness Engineer Subject Matter Expert to support the HQ Air Force Research Laboratory EN Directorate

Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit an understanding of applying MIL-HDBK-516C, Airworthiness Certification Criteria, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airworthiness certification processes to aircraft systems and subsystems.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and execution of AFRL programs requiring airworthiness assessments, policy, and training and safe-to-fly determinations.
  • Document/track each AFRL Airworthiness (AW) flight test project and draft military flight releases (MFR) or Civil Aircraft Operations (CAO) letters for each AFRL project.
  • Maintain records (database) management, report/presentation compilation, and editing, including Airworthiness kickoff meeting coordination/presentations to USAF senior leaders such as the USAF Technical Airworthiness Authority (TAA) and the USAF AW Office (AFLCMC/EZZ).
  • Provide overarching technical support to the AFRL Delegated Technical Authority (DTA) by performing the independent airworthiness assessment of AFRL program’s safe-to-fly and airworthiness determinations for all ranges of manned and unmanned air systems. This support to the DTA includes guidance, advice, counsel, and a flight release authorization (CAO letter or MFR) recommendation based upon findings of this independent assessment of program documentation (e.g., review of aircraft certification basis, CAO and Private Aircraft Operations (PAO) determinations, category 1 vs. category 2 vs. category 3 air system determinations, Airworthiness Determination Forms (ADFs) for reportable vs non-reportable modifications, MIL-HNDBK 516C, Airworthiness Certification Criteria, AFLCMC/EZZ processes, Contractor-Owned Contractor-Operated (COCO) aircraft, FAA 14 CFR & FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR) & Designated Engineering Representative (DER), and other FAA AW processes such as FAA Form 337, Major Repair & Alteration (Airframe, Powerplant, Propeller, or Appliance), FAA Form 8110-3 Statement of Compliance with Air Worthiness Standards.
  • Comply with USAF airworthiness policy to include Airworthiness Bulletins (AWBs) and Airworthiness Directives (ADs) approved and signed by the AF TAA.
  • Prepare local organizational instructions (OIs) or other AFRL policy documentation to be used to execute the AFRL AW assessment and flight release process IAW USAF policies. Conduct COCO assessments (technical and Maintenance & Operations (M&O)) where requested per AWB-340, USAF Airworthiness Requirements for Contractor-Owned and Contractor-Operated Air Systems
  • Support for Flight Test Planning Meetings (FTPMs) including logistical arrangements, instructions to program managers, agenda coordination, and meeting summary sheet.
  • Provide AFRL Program Managers, Scientists and Engineers, and program offices technical advice and SME level support regarding the AW Assessment and Flight Release process during the development, definition, composition, and execution of their technology program validation and verification efforts.
  • Support AFRL/EN in providing an annual AFRL DTA report 30 days after the end of every calendar year to the USAF Airworthiness Office summarizing airworthiness related activities to include a list, by platform, of airworthiness and flight release dispositions.
  • Support generation and maintenance of airworthiness and flight release disposition files and supporting documentation within SharePoint and the AFRL/EN email account.

Qualifications:

**Must have an active SECRET security clearance**

  • BS in Engineering - MA/MS preferred.
  • 10 years of experience in the respective Technical / Professional discipline.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $150,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year
