The Aircraft Mechanic Lead assigned to this position is a working lead responsible to the Off-Site Supervisor for performing duties as assigned. Frequently exercises independent judgment and possesses abilities sufficient to supervise a crew of aircraft mechanics. Work is performed under minimum supervision, and the employee consults with the supervisor only for the initial job assignment and where departures from standard practices are involved. This position is eligible for a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) stipend and separate supplemental compensation based on the employee’s endorsements and/or certifications.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions include but are not limited to, the following duties. Additional essential functions may be identified by the organization and listed as such in the incumbent's performance appraisal elements. Various tasks may be assigned under each essential function. The examples of work listed are not all-inclusive; they are examples only and may be amended or added to as needed by the organization.

  • Maintains Cessna 206 Stationair/King Air B300 airplanes
  • Launches and recovers aircraft. Performs scheduled & unscheduled maintenance actions to ensure aircraft airworthiness is maintained and approves aircraft for return to service
  • Maintains aircraft engine run & taxi qualification as required
  • Services aircraft with fuel, oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, air, oxygen, and nitrogen
  • Performs aircraft corrosion control procedures include wash, wiping down, polishing, and vacuum
  • Performs basic post-flight
  • Adjusts, aligns, and calibrates aircraft components. Performs functional checks of fuel, hydraulic, engines, avionics, and electro-environmental systems
  • Maintains aircraft support equipment
  • Prepares and maintains aircraft maintenance records and historical documents
  • Monitors/reviews deficiency reports for adverse trends
  • Uses applicable OEM manuals when performing aircraft maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Performs in-progress and follow-up inspections to ensure the quality of work
  • Researches, orders, and receives aircraft parts
  • Prepares parts for turn-in to the supply system. Initiates material reports as required
  • Maintains hand tools and special tools in safe and serviceable condition
  • Adheres to company tool accountability procedures
  • Reports unserviceable tools and equipment to the appropriate supervisor
  • Annotates equipment/tool inspection and condition documents
  • Checks serviceability, maintains and operates powered and non-powered support equipment
  • Complies with established policies, and procedures, set by the company
  • Complies with all safety, bioenvironmental, security, and housekeeping standards
  • Operates special purpose and regular vehicles as required
  • Practices good housekeeping, tool control, FOD awareness/prevention, and safety at all times
  • Assists in researching and requisitioning aircraft parts and components and determining the reparability and serviceability of these assets
  • Monitors bench stock items and assists with and/or performs inventory inspections
  • Maintains supply discipline in the work center at all times
  • Actively participates in the Safety Program
  • Ensures HAZMAT processes are followed
  • Operates and maintains Ground Support Equipment, flight line vehicles, and other support equipment as required
  • Discusses discrepancies with aircrews to obtain adequate troubleshooting information and data
  • Records maintenance actions on aircraft, engine, and component records, forms, tags, and other applicable documents according to FAA requirements as referenced in 14 CFR Part 43, 65, & 91
  • Performs preventive maintenance and servicing for assigned Ground Support Equipment
  • Performs related duties as required which may include flying on maintenance functional check flights
  • Able to work any assigned shift or schedule, including mission support outside normal duty hours and travel as required to support mission requirements

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required; two-year technical trade school, military experience, or equivalent on-the-job training is required
  • Must hold a valid Airframe & Powerplant certificate issued by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Inspector Authorization (IA) is preferred
  • Must have a minimum of three years of hands-on experience as an A&P mechanic on small to medium fixed-wing and light helicopter aircraft
  • Experience leading teams is preferred
  • Experience shall be in a similar position within the last twelve (12) months

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

The following are required:

  • Provide & maintain your own personal hand tools. (Company will not provide)
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance support for various fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft (e.g., Cessna 206 Station Air /King Air series airplanes
  • Basic knowledge of interpretation of wiring diagrams and test equipment for troubleshooting electrical systems
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, machines, and aircraft support equipment e.g. engine rinse, propeller balance equipment, shears, sheet metal brake
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to retain information and make decisions according to standard policies and procedures
  • Ability to determine work methods to effectively accomplish assignments, including delegation of tasks as necessary
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable Federal Aviation Administration guidelines and 14 CFR sections
  • Ability to make proper entries in aircraft logs and records
  • Obtain a DoD and/or DOJ Security Clearance as required
  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Maintain a valid US Passport and the appropriate vaccinations required for international travel
  • May travel up to 25% of the time

The employee works in an aircraft hangar for the majority of the shift and is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms as well as push and pull items. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly.

Normal day-to-day working conditions are inside an aircraft hangar with good ventilation and airflow. Work may be regularly required in outside weather conditions where employees will be exposed to all types of environmental conditions and extremes such as hot, cold, rain, wind, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and the risk of electrical shock. The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment including eye protection, ear protection, hand protection, respirators, masks, aprons, leather safety shoes, steel toe shoes, fall protection harness, and other equipment anytime the potential for hazards exists. The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places, confined spaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of radiation, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
