Job Summary

The Academic Advisor for Health Sciences provides accurate information in the advising process including the following: course selection, graduation requirements, articulation, and transfer information while considering the prominence of student retention. The advisor demonstrates a good understanding of each pathway in the division and the necessary prerequisites. The primary focus of the advisor will be to assist students with course scheduling and degree audits to ensure progress toward graduation and student success. Retention efforts will include advising, information regarding all programs, proper course sequence, and specific monitoring of the progress of students who are not in college-level coursework. The new advisor will collaborate with the other advisor in the division to focus efforts for student success among workforce and university transfer students. This position will primarily be on the Kilgore Campus.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Providing academic and career information to a diverse community and college student population
  • Participating in registration and student orientation
  • Assisting students with the development and updating of an education plan
  • Assisting with course selections
  • Consulting with students about future education planning
  • Maintaining student success by providing guidance to the student support services KC offers
  • Meeting with students through in-person, Zoom, and phone advising appointments
  • Keeping abreast of current education practices
  • Providing information about transfer colleges and universities
  • Working with appropriate resource persons to provide students with realistic information about courses
  • Providing accurate realistic information on job opportunities and job placement services

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills (email, phone, & in-person)
  • Must provide good customer service and interact with students in a positive manner
  • Have general skills in keyboarding and computer usage
  • Have the ability to multitask
  • Be well-organized and thorough
  • Be able to work well with little supervision
  • Deal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee population
  • This is a 12 month position

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Compensation for this 12-month position is $35,916

Kilgore College does not participate in the federal Social Security program. Positions will remain open until filled. Teaching positions will be required to submit official transcripts upon an offer of employment. Failure to submit proof within the required time shall result in immediate employment termination. All position appointments are subject to approval by the college's Board of Trustees.
