Summary:
Primary function: Provides guidance and counsel to undergraduate students to assist students in making decisions associated with their academic plans and leads retention and student success initiatives. Functional Summary: This position works with undergraduate students providing academic and retention support and helps to coordinate referrals to campus support services as necessary to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed at UIS.

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Works directly with students to develop educational plans, approve scheduling selections, and oversee registration for approved academic program of study for a minimum of 25 hours per week, Serves as a backup advisor for other advisors across programs
  • Participates in orientation, recruitment, and retention activities (including evening and week-end work), working directly with students and potential students as a representative of the CASA and UIS. Encourages students to participate in high-impact practices and extracurricular activities as appropriate
  • Proactively reach out to with students who may be at academic risk and provide student success coaching as appropriate
  • Engage in assessment of advising and retention activities
  • Collaborate on the facilitation and administration of retention software
  • Encourage students, faculty, and staff to use retention software. Hold individual and group software trainings; conduct open lab workshops; regularly communicate program developments in program through the web and social media
  • Engage in ongoing professional development as designated by the Director
  • Teaching one academic success skills course per semester based on need at the discretion of the Director

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree and two years' professional work experience in an advising, counseling,
mentoring, or comparable role in a four-year university setting, with demonstrated knowledge of best practices in advising services as promoted by the National Academic Advising Association;


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with presentation skills in academic success coursework and faculty development initiatives.
  • Experience working with retention software.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Subject matter knowledge of the disciplines housed within the advising unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and parents, including underserved populations and first-generation students and parents;
  • Demonstrated professional skills in communicating with faculty about academic issues.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills with an appropriate understanding of the needs of the audience and appropriate professionalism;
  • Demonstrated skills in teamwork and collaboration across campus units;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the interaction between academic programs and student support
services, including experience with referring students to appropriate services and communicating with services to prepare plans for student success;
  • Demonstrated student-focused interpersonal skills, including listening, interviewing, and navigating difficult dialogues with students related to academic or personal problems;
  • Demonstrated ability to work reliably and independently, with minimal supervision, in the scheduling and delivery of student services and in the leadership and management of multiple, time-sensitive projects;
