Railserve is a leading provider of in-plant rail switching, transloading, and material handling services — operating at over 75 locations in North America. We use our own locomotives and employees to safely move railcars within industrial, manufacturing and production plants. But we're not just rail car movers; we also provide a number of other services which include: rail car loading, rail car unloading, track maintenance, inspection or repair and many others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Placing and pulling rail cars, switching inbound and outbound traffic according to switching schedules.
  • Compile data, prepare, and send out reports and business correspondence.
  • Run estimates for all railcars in the loading bay.
  • Record QA data once railcar is loaded fully.
  • Assign and record seals for all loaded railcars.
  • Relay information via radio; what/how much to load, railcar movement, etc.
  • Maintain train log data.
  • Pre-release unit trains to customer.
  • Submit paperwork packages to Site Leader; packages include track list, load reports, inspections, bills of lading, etc.
  • Track all bad-order railcars.
  • Communicate with customers, employees, and other individuals to answer questions, disseminate or explain information, take orders, and address complaints.
  • General administrative duties include but are not limited to billing, answering telephones, typing or word processing, office machine operation, and filing.
  • Occasionally will scan trains/rail cars by walking on the ballast outdoors in the rail yard to perform a visual account of company equipment and its condition.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma (or equivalent) and 1-2 years administrative experience, preferably in an industrial and/or logistics environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Must have the ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel).
  • Proficiency with Terminal Boss and/or Yardmaster software a plus.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move light weight materials; walk outdoors on uneven terrain in various weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee works in an industrial office environment (indoor and outdoor). While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, or fumes when in the plant environment. This incumbent frequently works in an outdoor environment, in various weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
