This is responsible, specialized public safety work at a City of St. Petersburg swimming pool, providing swimming instructions, maintaining safe swimming conditions, enforcing established regulations, and related activities. Responsibilities include instructing classes on swimming and water safety; monitoring the activities of swimmers in and around the swimming facility; enforcing pool rules and regulations and water safety policies and practices; assisting in the maintenance of proper water condition and cleaning of the pools and facilities; Work requires the ability to effectively teach swimming and water safety through the use of proper methods and techniques; to prevent dangerous situations from arising; to recognize emergencies and take appropriate action; considerable skill in swimming, rescue work, resuscitation and first aid; and the ability to maintain a good working relationship with employees and the public; This is a seasonal, part time position assigned to one of the City’s swimming pools.

Salary: $16.73 - $22.23 Hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess at the time of application and continue to maintain the current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • Be able to maintain physical fitness and sufficient strength to control struggling or disabled swimmers.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Successfully meet the State of Florida good moral character and Level II background screening standards (Florida State Statutes 435.01-435.06).

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Have some experience as a water safety instructor or lifeguard.
  • Have a Lifeguarding, Community First Aid, and/or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
