Job Summary
The VP, Chief Medical Officer at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas reports to the CEO and is an active member of the Leadership Team. Work collaboratively with the CNO, COO, CFO, and CMO, Clinical Quality/Performance Improvement to drive and facilitate the strategic goals of the campus and System.

This principal role of the CMO is to lead and direct hospital-based programs in Care and Case Management, Laboratory Medicine, Risk Management, Clinic Ethics, Chaplaincy, and other areas as assigned.

In addition, this role works collaboratively with the CMO Clinical Quality/Performance Improvement for Clinical Quality, and Patient Safety in order to ensure that patients receive the highest quality and most efficient care.
The CMO will function as a member of the hospital senior management team and collaborate in the strategic development of short and long-term goals, and the implementation of efforts necessary to achieve those goals. The CMO will be administratively responsible for the direction of selected departments which support these functions.

In addition, they will be a resource to and assist the hospital Medical Staff and leadership in fulfilling their obligations in the areas of Credentialing, Clinical Quality, Peer Review and Regulatory Compliance. Facilitating the application of evidence-based and safe clinical practices and the appropriate utilization of clinical resources will be key responsibilities of this role.

This role has direct oversight of 6 departments which includes 176 FTEs. Job Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Medical Doctorate from an accredited medical school required. Additional business degree or program completion, preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Licensed to practice as a MD in the State of Texas or ability to obtain licensure in the State of Texas. Board certification in primary care or area of specialty as appropriate to the assigned provider groups.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Five (5) years of experience in a physician leadership or practice leadership role with experience in physician alignment and engagement is required.
  • Rapport and credibility with physician colleagues
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent conflict resolution, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to set strategic direction, lead teams and work well in a team environment with a high level of integrity and ethics.
  • Exhibits understanding of healthcare business acumen and finance knowledge.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Directs and facilitates the application of evidence-based and safe clinical practices, the effective measurement of clinical outcomes, and clinical performance improvement activities.
  • Provides administrative leadership and direction for hospital-based departments in Care Management, Lab Services, Risk Management, Clinical Ethics, Clinical Research, Medical Staff, Chaplaincy and other areas as assigned.
  • In partnership with the VP, CMO of Clinical Quality/Patient Safety, focuses on Quality and Performance Improvement, by participating in meetings related to safety events, monitors the variance reporting system, manages the distribution of events to applicable stakeholders, conducts event analysis, and responds to infection prevention opportunities.
  • Drives physician engagement and communications with medical staff members ensuring alignment/integration with strategic initiatives.
  • Provides advocacy and clinical perspective with leaders to support patient-centered mission, vision, values and strategies by optimizing the efficient and appropriate utilization of clinical resources.
  • Collaborates with management and clinical leadership in the planning and implementation of innovative programs to achieve short and long term goals.
  • Supports the development and growth of the health system service lines by working with administration and physician leaders to improve clinical operations.
  • Aligns and supports the physician organization and system Quality teams with a dotted line to the System Chief Quality Officer.
  • Assists and be a resource to the hospital medical staff and leadership in fulfilling their obligations in Credentialing, Clinical Quality, Peer Review, Regulatory Compliance, and Risk Management.
  • Ensures timely and reliable communication of key matters to the medical staff.
  • Plays an active role in Joint Commission and other regulatory surveys and audits.
  • Assist the CMIO in physician coordination, education and communications related to EHR implementation.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
