General Description

Under the basic supervision of the Public Works Director. Participates in the repair/replacement/maintenance work on all City of Caldwell streets/drainage.

Essential Job Duties

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operates many varieties of heavy equipment, motor vehicles, provides preventative maintenance on all equipment assigned. Must have ability to operate equipment safely and skillfully in and around traffic, construction sites and work areas.

· Participates in the construction and maintenance of city streets and drainage projects as instructed by Supervisor of Street/Drainage Department Head.

· Assists in the patching of City of Caldwell streets and drainage as needed.

· Employees may be required to operate more than one piece of heavy equipment in an eight-hour period.

· Operates, transports, and maintains various types of equipment including but not limited to backhoes, small trucks, tractor mowers, and other light motorized equipment.

· Maintains easements and rights-of-way; edges, mows, and trims vegetation and weeds; removes garbage and debris; levels unpaved surfaces and fills potholes; re-posts traffic control devices and barriers.

· Performs cement and asphalt repairs including sealing cracks and potholes; repairs and replaces broken or damaged signs; replaces and installs street reflectors, barriers, and advisory signs.

· Completes storm water ditch maintenance; inspects ditches; clears blockages and repairs or replaces structures; jets pipelines; clears grates; inspects illegal dumping and discharge to aid in pollution prevention.

· Will be required to respond after hour emergencies and weekends as needed; and participates in City-wide emergency response as necessary; clears debris from accidents and weather events; posts advisory and warning signs, conducts traffic control.

· Ability to stand for long periods of time to flag traffic and/or patch roads or streets.

· Work in various weather conditions.

· May be required to work in the Sanitation Department when understaffed.

· Assists other departments as needed.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Basic Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED certificate or equivalent and/or minimum of 1 year experience in road construction practices.
  • Must have a Class B (CDL) Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record or obtain within one year.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Must posses required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with having had a similar position for one to two years.

Physical Requirements:

Exerting in excess of 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
