The Agnes Irwin School, an all-girls' Pre-K through 12th-grade independent school in the Philadelphia suburbs, is committed to fostering the intellectual and personal growth of girls and young women. Currently, The Agnes Irwin School is seeking a full-time experienced US Science Teacher and Department Chair. Successful candidates will be committed to fostering the intellectual and personal growth of students through the mission of The Agnes Irwin School and the Core Values of Excellence, Character, Community, and Respect.


Responsibilities include:

  • Teach three to four sections of upper school Science courses, including but not limited to Chemistry I Honors, Chemistry II Honors: Advanced Topics and Organic Chemistry, and Microbiology
  • Implement current curriculum and contribute to its ongoing development
  • Prepare course materials
  • Maintain student attendance and grade records
  • Evaluate and grade student work
  • Be available to meet individually with students during office hours and planning periods
  • Participate in the life of the middle and/or upper school by serving as an advisor and/or club sponsor as necessary
  • Participate in all staff meetings, assemblies, and other required school functions, including occasional evening or weekend events
  • Work constructively with parents and colleagues
  • Inform parents and Division Director of students’ progress through interims, written reports and conferences

Department Chair Responsibilities include:

  • Support, value and motivate department members.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and research in the academic discipline and the education of girls.
  • Model effective teaching in the discipline.
  • Evaluate faculty performance according to evaluation guidelines.
  • Provide clear and direct performance feedback to teachers to allow for professional growth.
  • Facilitate professional development for department members.
  • Investigate, promote, and develop the expertise within the department for the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Liaise closely with appropriate personnel on progress of students, faculty and program.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Head of School, Division Directors, and Human Resources to recruit and hire faculty and substitutes in accordance with the school’s hiring procedures.
  • Provide mentorship for new faculty.
  • Be an advocate and spokesperson for the department with colleagues, parents and prospective students/parents.
  • Coordinate teaching assignments and sectioning in collaboration with the Program Team.
  • Ensure that the department engages in regular, Pre-K through 12 curriculum review to ensure academic excellence, diversity, and cultural competency.
  • Articulate the Pre-K through 12 scope and sequence of the department curriculum through active engagement with all divisions.
  • Teach classes in the field of expertise.
  • Oversee middle and upper school student course placement; support lower school as necessary.
  • Plan and facilitate regularly scheduled department meetings. Attend and participate in department chair meetings and retreats as necessary.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry Biology, secondary education, or related discipline required; advanced degree and previous experience teaching upper school Chemistry and/or Biology preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of classroom technology: Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Blackbaud
  • Ability to engage students in meaningful classroom activities; excellent classroom management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with all members of the School community
  • Willingness and ability to work occasional evenings for meetings, conferences, or school activities as required
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and respect different values and viewpoints
