Position Summary:

Girl Scouts of Western Washington is excited to give you the opportunity to join our Seasonal Team at Camp River Ranch. Camp River Ranch, located at the foothills of the Cascades in Carnation, Washington; followed by 3 weeks of summer fun at Camp St. Albans, at the base of the Olympic mountains on Lake Devereaux in Allyn, Washington. Camp staff will attend paid staff training and will receive assistance to move between camp properties during the week we changeover in July.

This is a Seasonal Full - Time position paying $600.00 to $625.00 per week. This position requires that you live on Camp for the Summer.

Unit Counselors live and work directly with the campers from the moment they arrive until the day they leave. Working in a Unit with at least one other Unit Counselor and 10 – 20 campers, Unit Counselors coordinate with Program Specialists to create and execute a week-long schedule uniquely molded to the goals and interests of the campers in their unit. Unit Counselors are the first to provide structure, safety, behavior management, and comfort to the campers and set the tone for the camper’s experience. Individuals in this position can work with varying age groups and program areas, as well as in various parts of camp every week.

General Responsibilities

• Ensure work, living and activity areas are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, Girl Scouts of the USA Safety Activity Checkpoints and GSWW.
• With co-counselor, responsible for direction, supervision, and organization of 10-20 campers during all aspects of a camper’s day, including but not limited to wake-up/bedtime routines, time in their living unit, within activities and throughout camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
• Plan and conduct activities to achieve camper development objectives
• Assist Program Specialists during activities
• Prepare for and participate enthusiastically in all aspects of camp life including songs, meals, nature hikes of 2-3 miles, activities, campfire, staff training, meetings, clean-up of camp, and camp closing
• Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including food and equipment requests, Incident Reports, evaluations, and weekly schedules
• Carry out established duties regarding camper health, safety, and program goals
• Encourage respect for self, others, individual property, and the environment
• Observe and assess camper behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
• Responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff and creating harmonious relationships with campers, parents/guardians, and staff.
• Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior, including but not limited to: demonstrating maturity, effective communication techniques, cleanliness, good hygiene, punctuality, sportsmanship, sharing, and following camp policies
• Provide quality guest service that resolves concerns by offering creative solutions in a timely manner.
• Promote Girl Scouting in a positive manner to the public and co-workers.
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Desire and ability to supervise and instruct children of various ages in an outdoor setting while living in a communal space with the youth.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activities.
• Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant, 24-hour supervision of campers.
• Ability to hike 5 miles of uneven terrain, with a 25-pound pack.
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
• Ability to receive instruction and supervision.
• Exhibits mature and responsible behavior at all times.
• Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills.
• Ability to work with, communicate with and teach children ages six through seventeen.
• Continuous ability to work well on a team.
• Must reside on camp property while campers are on site and camp is in session.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with children of various ages.
• Previous Girl Scout camp and/or overnight camp experience.
• Knowledge of Girl Scout programming, awards, and culture preferred.
• Comfort with and ability to perform/teach various camp activities such as boating, crafts, outdoor cooking, chopping wood, fire building, etc.
• Ability to communicate and work with staff and campers from diverse backgrounds in a productive and collaborative way.
• Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record.
