Job Summary:

The Ultrasound Technologist performs or assists in ultrasound examinations, renders technical assistance to the Radiologist, and maintains and cares for all ultrasound equipment.

Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Prepares and examines all patients, verifying their identity for ultrasound examinations in accordance with established departmental procedures and techniques, which includes obtaining health status and medical history, patient’s cooperation or ability to tolerate the examination. Confirms that the ultrasound examination correlates with patient clinical history and presentation. Inform physician in charge of any contraindications to the procedure.

2. Operates and adjusts ultrasound equipment, cleans and makes minor adjustments, taking safety precautions necessary to protect patients and personnel from electric shock or other hazards. Reports any malfunction to the appropriate person.

3. Communicates with the patient, their representative and staff. Explains the exam and instructions to the patient and other health care providers, answering questions that are unrelated to specific diagnostic, treatment and/or prognosis.

4. Develops and/or modifies a procedure plan from health status and medical history, using age and gender appropriate considerations .Uses independent professional judgment to adopt the procedure plan to optimize exam results. Performs exams under general or direct physician supervision as defined by the procedure, adjusting scanning technique to optimize image qualify and spectral waveform characteristics.

5. Evaluates sonographic images for technical and diagnostic acceptability to ensure that the prescribed images are obtained.

6. Applies the necessary technical judgment to obtain studies of an acceptable diagnostic quality according to written protocols and the patient’s needs.

7. Evaluates radiographs for technical acceptability and ensures images are transmitted to PACS in a timely fashion.

8. Analyzes sonographic findings so comprehensive exams sufficient for a physician to direct patient management and render a diagnosis. Perform measurements and calculations according to laboratory and ACR protocols and guidelines. Minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising exam quality or completeness.

9. Notifies appropriate health care provider when immediate medical attention is needed Evaluates patient's physical and mental status prior to discharge from the ultrasound department.

10. Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician in rendering a diagnosis and for archival purposes. Provides an oral summary of preliminary findings to the radiologist and enters preliminary findings in PACS notes.

11. Ensures adequate supplies are available for use.

12. Helps maintain a safe working environment.

13. Ensures room cleanliness, before and after each procedure.

14. Assists in the orientation and mentor of new Ultrasound personnel.

15. May answers telephones, schedules examinations and initiate transportation.

16. Attends in-services and other professional development meetings as required.

17. Maintains in good standing, licensure specific to the job

18. Other relevant duties as assigned


Requirements:

  • High School Graduate
  • Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
  • 0- 2 years of experience as Ultrasound Technologist
