Statement of the Job:

The core of our outdoor educational staff at Bryant Pond 4-H Camp is our counselors, which are integral to the success of our summer programs. Counselors lead groups of campers from 6 to 12 participant’s ages 7 to 17, for week-long programs. (Several programs are 2-weeks long)


This role as a Senior Field Teacher, requires a high level of enthusiasm for working with children of various ages as well as other Field Teachers, with a strong dedication to safety and fun. The right candidate for this position will be able to support all Conservation Education and Recreational Safety programs at Bryant Pond. Typical weekly salary for this temporary (mid-June to mid-August) position is $450 - $550 commensurate with experience and qualifications.


Responsibilities:

  • Support in the delivery of conservation education lessons including firearms safety, map and compass and riflery
  • Nighttime duties including- Monitoring shower house and overnight support
  • Supporting and filling in for programming
  • High Ropes Course support
  • Occasional bunk duty, or campsite coverage
  • Attend staff meetings and debriefs as scheduled.
  • Plan lessons, lead activities, mentor staff and campers, and provide opportunities for campers and staff to learn and explore the outdoors through high-quality experiences.
  • Supervise campers and ensure safety and risk management policies are followed.
  • Perform camp chores that benefit the greater community.
  • Provide basic first aid as needed
  • Depending on training, some staff will also be lifeguards, shooting sports instructors, trip leaders, or other leadership roles as warranted and agreed upon.

Qualifications:

  • Previous camp experience or working with youth preferred
  • Must have a desire to work with various age groups
  • Must be a positive role model
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Good communication skills
  • Interest or background in the outdoors: hiking, nature, hunting, fishing, canoeing, etc.
  • Willing to live and work in a community setting with changing program needs and focuses.
  • Attend a week-long staff training at Bryant Pond prior to the start of camp.
  • Have an interest and/or experience with topics related to conservation education including boating, atvs, hunting, fishing and firearm handling.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Typically Sunday through Friday, with occasional weekend programming.
  • Sunday 11:30 a.m.-Friday 2 p.m. unless otherwise scheduled
  • 1 evening typically Tuesday or Wednesday off or 4 hour mid-day off block
  • 8 weeks of camp programs plus 1 week of staff training *LG, TLT, or WFA may be scheduled at other times.
  • Room and Board are included. *Under 18 must have offsite weekend accommodations throughout the season, Friday evening through Sunday a.m. unless agreed upon by Camp Director.
  • Lifeguards will be trained as required
  • Field Teachers are salaried employees and are paid on a biweekly basis. The starting salary begins at $500/week. Benefits include housing (rustic cabins with electricity), food, laundry, Internet access, and backcountry equipment usage. Bryant Pond can be used as a college internship site in any season. Unfortunately, Field Staff are not permitted to have pets on the University of Maine Bryant Pond campus.

Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center is located in Bryant Pond, Maine is nestled on the shores of Lake Christopher with 160 acres of forest and mountain trails leading to remote campsites, streams, ponds, wetlands, and a mountain summit. A short drive from the Campus you can be in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest or the Rangeley Lakes area. The local area provides many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts including rock climbing, backpacking, hunting and fishing, canoeing, and a large winter ski and sport industry. Portland, Maine’s largest city is only an hour’s drive with live music, great food, and shopping.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Experiential education experience with youth, preferably in an outdoor setting
  • Knowledge of ecological concepts and natural history
  • Ability to work in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions
  • Safely lead groups over various terrain (uneven ground, roots, uphill hiking), while carrying a small backpack with teaching and first aid supplies
  • Basic First Aid/CPR certification (Training provided as necessary)
