This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position for the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Services at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

This position will be located in Reedsport, Oregon.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Elliott State Forest is in the process of being purchased by Oregon State University and converted to a research forest where the largest-scale long-term forestry experiment ever would be conducted, with the primary goal of understanding how to best balance the needs of biodiversity and timber production. Next summer we will be collecting baseline data across stand ages and forest management practices throughout the Elliott State Forest and nearby managed forests. This work is a collaboration of the Forest Landscape Ecology Lab led by Dr. Matthew Betts and the Quantitative Wildlife Ecology, Conservation, and Environmental Genetics Lab led by Dr. Taal Levi. POSITION DESCRIPTION
These positions will be part of a field crew utilizing various survey methods for diverse taxa. Taxa surveyed will include invertebrates (primarily beetles, flying insects, and insect pollinators), medium and large mammals, birds, bats, plants, and fungi.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $9 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 majors in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates. We are a vibrant department that promotes a supportive “family” atmosphere for all students and employees.
Position Duties
100% – Field Research:
  • Maintain professional working relationships with all co-workers on the job and in shared housing.
  • Follow safety check-in and check-out protocols.
  • Navigate safely off-trail in backcountry areas using GPS devices and/or topographic maps over challenging terrain with limited cell phone service.
  • Transport field equipment (40 lbs. or more) over long distances (up to 2 miles per site) on-trail and short distance (up to 500 meters per site) off-trail in steep, densely vegetated terrain.
  • Camp overnight (for up to several days) in remote locations.
  • Drive long distances on both busy coastal roads and on unimproved forest roads that require 4-wheel drive.
  • Set up biodiversity sites and record site data following detailed scientific survey protocols.
  • Set and check trail camera stations, baited camera stations, acoustic recorders, pitfall.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
Two years of college-level courses in ecology, wildlife, biology, botany or related field OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Ability and willingness to work in a crew as a communicative, productive member

Ability and willingness to handle bait, scent lure, and insect samples

Possess good common sense and problem-solving skills and be detail oriented

Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Education or interest in ecology, biodiversity, and/or forest management

Experience working and communicating as a positive member of a team
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The crew will be stationed in shared field housing on/near the central Oregon coast and will work a 4 day-10 hour schedule Mon.-Thurs. each week. Most weeks will require camping during the work week (camping gear will be provided). Fieldwork will be variable and long days (12 hours or more) are expected. The ability to work long hours and variable schedules in all weather conditions (including inclement weather) is required.

The ability to physically complete all listed duties and responsibilities (hiking and transporting field equipment up to 10 miles per day, often off-trail in steep, densely vegetated terrain) is required.

Must be able and willing to drive and camp in remote locations, without cell reception.
This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
