Description of Job

This position will assist in a study that will evaluate stocking success of the State Endangered Plains Minnow Hybognathus placitus in the Arkansas River. This will be conducted by collecting eggs and larvae with drift nets and Moore egg collectors.

  • Samples will be processed by either genetic analysis or laboratory rearing until fish are large enough to be identified.
  • This assessment of hatchery stocking success will provide guidance regarding if continued stocking in certain areas is required, or if future hatchery production would be better utilized in new locations to further expand the species range and increase the probability of persistence.
  • Extended weekly travel is required (Monday through Thursday most weeks).
  • This position will also assist other CPW aquatic staff as needed, which will provide the successful applicant with a breadth of fisheries experience.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a current & valid drivers’ license required for operating a state vehicle.
  • Must be willing and able to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with the public
  • Ability to work independently and work well within a team.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside which may involve inclement weather.
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds repeatedly during the course of a workday.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Fish identification skills, especially regarding larval fishes, is preferred.
  • Experience related to fisheries or wildlife biology is preferred.
  • Fish culture, wet laboratory maintenance, equipment handling and maintenance (including welding) experience is beneficial.
  • The use of computer programs such as Excel, Word, Access, MARK, and R will be considered when selecting employees.
  • College degree in a related field is preferred but not required
