JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a candidate for a Research Technologist position in the Selleck Lab part of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology studying neurodegenerative disease processes in model systems including Drosophila and human iPSCs. Some experience with Drosophila genetics, confocal microscopy, tissue culture, and molecular biology methods such as qPCR, RNA isolation is desirable. Responsibilities include training and assisting undergraduate researchers in their experiments, and conducting experiments under the direction of the head of lab.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Apply standard scientific practices, techniques, and methods as appropriate for specific situation, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow protocols through a series of related detailed steps or processes

  • Contribute to experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include measurements and recording of observations, collecting, compiling and processing of data

  • Organize data/findings for use in technical reports, documents, or oral/written presentations

  • May coordinate operational activities in a research laboratory, providing support services to researchers and technicians

  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory

  • Coordinate ordering, maintaining appropriate inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab

  • Instruct others in protocols and instrumentation

  • May supervise lower level staff, wage employees and/or students

This position typically requires a Bachelor's d egree or higher plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience . This position will be filled as a level 1 or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.

This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with an excellent possibility of refunding. Additionally, th is position will require successful completion of standard background checks.
