Overview:
Radiation Effects and Microstructural Analysis Group (REMAG) is seeking an Associate Technician who will focus on the advanced characterization and examination of irradiated materials. This position resides in the Radiation Effects and Microstructural Analysis Group (REMAG) within the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


REMAG is looking for a self-starting and highly motivated individual to join their research team working on advanced characterization and examination of irradiated materials. This individual will perform tasks assigned by the technical laboratory coordinator and project leaders that will primarily involve laboratory-based activities required for the characterization of irradiated materials and nuclear fuel. Much of this work will occur in an existing ORNL radiological facility called the Low Activation Materials Development & Analysis (LAMDA) Laboratory. This facility houses a suite of characterization equipment used to perform post-irradiation examination of irradiated materials under different conditions. The LAMDA Associate Technician will interface with ORNL scientists, engineers, and other research support staff to perform various process steps and characterization methods. The individual will also be responsible for many aspects of the daily operation of a radiological area dedicated to work with radioactive material.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Direct hands-on work in a radiological materials laboratory
  • Independently perform/prepare numerous specimen characterization methods, including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, specimen polishing and inspection, mechanical testing, and thermal properties testing
  • Acquire and process complex data as described in manual or work proposal
  • Perform work collaboratively with other team members and keep the sequence of tasks
  • Contribute to the preparation of papers and presentations describing research results for technical manuscripts, peer-reviewed journals, conferences, program reviews, and technical committees
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma
  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant experinece


Preferred Qualifications:

  • AS degree in materials science, engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in material measurements equipment: calipers, micrometers, and other measurement instruments
  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude for careful and meticulous manual work requiring above average dexterity
  • Experience using laboratory microscopes
  • Experience working in a radiological/nuclear facility
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering inside and outside ORNL
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changes needed
