Pay Range

$104,220 - $134,976 Annually

Job Description

We are looking for a Technical Operations Hardware Specialist. You will monitor the availability, connectivity, and performance of high-performance computer systems, massive storage systems, networks, and facilities. You will provide advanced technical support for unique hardware platforms and be a liaison for programmatic customers in the Global Security and WCI directorates. You will be in the Livermore Computing (LC) Division in the Computing Directorate.

You will

  • Provide advanced technical support and data center facilities monitoring for the high-performance systems in LC, including large clusters, disk storage systems, Ethernet, and lnfiniBand networks and Archival Storage systems and perform emergency event management responsibilities.
  • Monitor systems including troubleshooting software, hardware, networks, and document issues, by providing UNIX system knowledge and a variety of diagnostic tools.
  • Perform installation of software releases, patches of operating systems and utilities, third-party products, and open-source software.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for specialized hardware including Advanced Technology HPC platforms, archival storage systems, network encryptors, and parallel file systems
  • Be the face of Livermore Computing as a primary technical liaison for special programmatic customers running HPC systems at high classification levels.
  • Develop new processes to improve operational efficiencies in the HPC center. Provide training, mentoring, and documentation to LC Operations personnel across all shifts in partnership with the group leader and shift supervisors.
  • Evaluate and recommend procurement of HPC hardware and software, in collaboration with management, customers, and team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Active U.S. DOE Q level security clearance and TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in a computer or engineering related field or the equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex problems in a heterogeneous platform environment.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching others and developing plans and processes to improve deficiencies and improve effectiveness.
  • Experience and knowledge of the skills needed for a customer support role to include a focus on listening, rapport-building, good communication skills, friendly and approachable nature, courtesy and patience, and negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Experience recognizing training opportunities and acting as an escalation resource.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of and technical experience with Linux operating systems and related hardware.
  • Advanced ability to set priorities and independently resolve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with a multi-disciplinary staff in a team environment.
