DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio. DYS is statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10-21, who have been adjudicated and committed by one of Ohio's 88 county juvenile courts. During their stay with DYS, youth are engaged in programming that is designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs. DYS reaches thousands of youth in facilities and those on parole.

The Opportunity…

DYS provides stability, support, safety, and security for all employees. The Teacher will provide valuable experience and knowledge to the youth we serve.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess educational needs of youth: develop and implement lesson plans to address those needs to include individualized assignments and training
  • Provide instruction in Science with individual assistance
  • Administer, score and interpret examinations and proficiency indicators
  • Maintain discipline and/or security
  • Counsel students concerning their performance, behavior and/or personal problems
  • Attend variety of meetings (e.g., in-service training, parent conferences, treatment team, student interviews)
  • Prepare required records and reports (e.g., enrollment figures, grades, student progress)
  • Inventory and order supplies and materials needed
  • Organize and/or monitor extracurricular activities
  • Research, select and recommend new teaching materials
  • Salary will be determined by degree and years of experience.
  • Comprehensive paid training will be provided to the selected candidate.

Qualifications
Current Teacher Certificate appropriate for science & grade level to be assigned; Teacher 1, 71281, must also have baccalaureate degree or less;


Knowledge of:
teacher education designed for science & assigned grade level; departmental policies & procedures concerning operations of educational program to include those for discipline &/or security*.

Skill in: operating equipment associated with science & audio-visual equipment.

Ability to: assess educational needs of students & develop appropriate lesson plans & individualized assistance; prepare & maintain accurate & concise reports & records; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; establish good rapport with students & work cooperatively with other facility staff members.
