SYSTEM CHIEF NURSING OFFICER | Work from Home/Remote

Reports to: Chief Clinical Officer

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:

The Chief Nursing Officer works with industry subject matter experts to drive innovation in clinical care models for the health system. The CNO designs, creates and launches innovation testing and measuring results in approved clinical environments and units to discern new best practice in care delivery models and methods. Has a working knowledge of systems thinking, lean and six sigma methodologies and strategies, statistical and financial and healthcare business acumen to make decisions, organize teams and drive ministry wide results. Commissions and organizes cross functional (clinical & shared services) teams to implement changes system wide with speed, communicating results across BSMH. Develops KPIs and system wide improvement goals year over year. This position decides clinical requirements and education strategy for our nursing teams within the markets. The chief nurse drives for results on system-wide nursing strategies throughout the organization. This role has a dotted line reporting matrixed reporting relationship with BSMH Market CNOs. Represents BSMH nursing in local and national forums.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establishes the system professional nursing vision responsive to the changing environment.

  • Sets nursing clinical innovation strategy for the system.

  • Leads and directs activities of transformation and innovation to redefine roles and redesign the care delivery model.

  • In collaboration with physician partners leads activities for quality safety regulatory and experience to response to identified KPIs and address variability and outcomes.

  • Partner with senior executives to understand and assess business strategy and direction based on current ministry strategic plans.

  • Proactively provide professional nursing insight to ensure standard approach for professional nurses throughout the organization.

  • Maintain collaboration and partnership with BSMH, Regional, Community, State, and National efforts to promote professional nursing practice.

  • Exercise final decision-making authority over staff who provide nursing care, treatment and services.

  • Collaborate with other subject matter experts in developing nursing service objectives, systems, tools and strategies, ensuring that safe patient needs are met.

  • Lead in a changing environment with a focus on stabilization of market operational issues while remaining in alignment with the strategic plan of the ministry.

  • Use best practice principles to promote professional nursing practice connecting the continuum of care.

  • Develop professional nurse leaders to create succession planning and empower staff to exceed clinical quality, patient safety and the environment of care.

  • Collaborates on workforce development plans based on objective data; initiates standardization of safe, staffing plans, minimizes risk management vulnerabilities.

Licensing/Certification

  • State Nursing License (in applicable state) required

  • Advanced Nursing Certification in Nursing Specialty including Nurse Leadership preferred

  • Prefer Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).

Education

  • Doctorate Nursing Practice (DNP) required

Work Experience

  • 10 years of progressively responsible and complex professional experience in nursing management function, including a minimum of 8 years in management.

  • Experience in creating innovative clinical models and proven track record for results.

  • Strategic planning

  • Healthcare business acumen

  • Forecasting, proforma development, modeling, and budget management

  • Change management, understanding of lean, six sigma principles, implemented major change and drove results successfully in a highly matrixed environment

  • Proven acumen in talent development.

  • Relationship building and influencing skills.

  • Prefer experience working with human-centered design, systems thinking

Training

  • Prefer Lean, Six Sigma training or Belt (green or black belt).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft computer software tools (spreadsheet, word processing, presentation)
