Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Utilizing a variety of resources, the onsite Surgery Scheduler for Bon Secours Pediatric Surgery at St. Mary’s is responsible for accurately scheduling all pediatric surgical procedures. This position shares information with appropriate personnel to ensure the smooth processing of patients through the surgical pathways and clinics. The surgery scheduler verifies patient benefits and completes insurance precertification as required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinate and schedule surgeries and procedures as designated by physicians.
  • Direct accuracy for scheduling and accurately performs record specific information concerning each case.
  • Interact with patients, physicians, and other staff both within the practice and at outside facilities providing accurate, timely and responsive information.
  • Coordinate processes and route all paperwork as required to meet physician and facility requirements.
  • Notify appropriate staff members of special needs for any case.
  • Ensure efficient telephone communication.
  • Follow all written protocols and procedures of the practice.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and helpfulness toward patients and their families.
  • Verifications of benefits, pre-certifications, and collection of patients’ responsibility. Review and assess pertinent medical documentation in EPIC to complete prior authorization for surgeries.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Participates as a team member by performing additional assignments not directly related to the job description when workload requires and as requested by department leadership.
  • 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Clear, distinct diction and audio acuity is essential for communicating with physicians, visitors, and co-workers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Some college preferred.
  • One year computer experience required
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Good working knowledge of medical/surgical terminology

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in surgery scheduling
  • Experience in outpatient scheduling/front office
  • Able to type 50 words per minute with accuracy
