Job Summary
The Mescalero Apache Tribe has contracted the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Mescalero Agency, Branch of Natural
Resource functions, through Public Law 93-638. This includes a Wildlife Management position. The
Supervisory Wildlife Biologist position will be directly supervised by the Director of the Division of Resource
Management and Protection, and will provide professional oversight for the Wildlife Management Section of
the Division of Resource Management and Protection (DRMP). This is an outstanding opportunity to develop a
new wildlife management section under DRMP.

The Mescalero Apache Reservation is located in the sky-islands of south-central New Mexico, with elevations
ranging from 5,400 feet and rising to 12,003 feet at the peak of Sierra Blanca. Total land area of the
reservation is approximately 460,678 acres and spans seven community types, including Chihuahuan desert,
grassland/oak woodland, piñon-juniper, Ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, spruce-fir and alpine community
types. This broad range of community types provides habitat for a diversity of wildlife species, which also
supports a big-game hunting program through the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. The Tribe
also operates a Ranching Enterprise, raising grass-fed beef. There are many varied recreational opportunities
offered within the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for monitoring the interactions between wildlife populations, habitat attributes, climate
change, anthropogenic change and management actions on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, and
assisting in the development, implementation and evaluation of wildlife and habitat management
programs. 

Directs the activities of the Wildlife Management Section, and develops wildlife management projects
designed to meet Tribal goals, objectives and priorities, as identified in coordination with Tribal
leadership. An interdisciplinary team approach to project development will be emphasized, and will
consider other natural resource objectives, such as reducing soil erosion, protecting water quality,
enhancing forest productivity and water yield, and restoring rangeland habitat. 

Will work in collaboration with the Supervisory Rangeland Specialist/Rangeland Management Section
in working towards managing overall carrying capacity of Tribal lands, exploring the various
interactions and impacts upon wildlife populations. 

Provides technical guidance and oversight for staff under the Wildlife Management Section to ensure
implementation of 

Incumbent will oversee all data collection and habitat assessment activities necessary to support a
wildlife monitoring program.

MESCALERO APACHE TRIBE
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT 

Will be required to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) GPS technology to monitor wildlife
populations and movements across the landscape, as well as map project locations/accomplishment. 

Incumbent will be responsible for care of all equipment, supplies and Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) assigned to the Wildlife Management Section, as well as program vehicles. 

Will be required to participate in applicable training relating to job description, and must follow
appropriate operational and safety guidelines, to prevent injury to yourself and coworkers. 

Attends training classes and seminars on safety, first aid, equipment/machinery operation, and related
topics to maintain and enhance job knowledge. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 
High School Diploma or GED required. Must be 18 years of age or older. 
Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Biology, or closely related science/natural resources field. 
Minimum of three years’ experience in wildlife management, including project development. 
Must be able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment, with professional and technical staff

interacting closely. 
Must possess excellent computer and communication skills (both written and oral). 
Must have and maintain valid New Mexico Driver’s license. 
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation. 
Applicant will be required to obtain Applicator’s License for the use of pesticides and herbicides, which

will require attending training and taking written exams. 
Selection will comply with “Tribal Preference Hiring” Ordinance 06-02.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or
feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or
hear. The employee occasionally is required to sit; climb or balance; and smell. The employee must lift and/or move up
to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is generally performed outdoors. Exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur
while performing outdoor duties. Prolonged sitting while driving is a daily occurrence. Standing and walking may be on
uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or
hardhats are needed may occur. Travel within the reservation area is required for completing work.
