Community and Family Resources is seeking a Counselor to complete substance use evaluations with our patients and determine appropriate level of care at our Des Moines location. This person will join a dynamic team of individuals that truly care about those that they serve and are excited about the assisting others in the recovery process.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Intake/Assessments:
    • Assists clients in completion of necessary assessment forms/documents.
    • Conducts individual assessment sessions for completion of comprehensive assessment histories of clients.
    • Participates with the direct supervisor in development of recommendations for clients.
    • Prepares and distributes assessment results, reports, etc., as required and requested.
    • Assists in other assessment processes as required and requested.
  • Support Services:
    • Assists individuals and families in the intervention process through educational and planning sessions and, when feasible, participates in the interventions.
    • Maintains appropriate client and pre-client case records.
    • Provides clients and families with referral resources for the services not provided by this agency or when this agency’s services are not appropriate.
    • Provides training for agency staff in areas of own expertise.
  • Community Education and Prevention:
    • Participates in coordination of community awareness programs concerning problem-gambling and substance use,
    • Provides community education about problem gambling and substance use when consistent with program philosophy and personal expertise.

Schedule:

  • Type: Full-time
  • Hours: Tuesday - Friday 9 to 5:30 and Saturday 9 am until 1 pm.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • Candidates are required have current certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC or IADC).
  • Bachelors or Masters degree required, preferably in social or behavioral sciences or related field. Candidates with an Associates degree and 3+ years of experience as a substance use or gambling treatment counselor may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of problem gambling and substance abuse treatment.
  • Knowledge of the psychosocial aspects of substance abuse.
  • Knowledge of the principles of recording and report writing.
  • Knowledge of 42CFR and HIPPA and how it relates to agency.
  • Knowledge of CARF and IDPH licensure standards.
  • Knowledge of public/private welfare, health care, problem gambling and substance use agencies available in the area served by this agency.
  • Computer skills including ability to use internet software, spreadsheet software, word-processing software, and electronic health record.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, regularly, and fluently in English; bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or agency employees.
  • Ability to apply previous experience and training to the provision of problem gambling and substance use treatment services.
  • Ability to establish good working relationship with clients and staff.
  • Ability to secure appropriate information by direct and collateral interviews.
  • Ability to analyze problems presented, to bring agency/community resources to bear within policies and regulations, and to develop and implement effective courses of action.
  • Skill in client evaluation, therapeutic planning, and integrating best practices into the therapeutic milieu.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Ability to diffuse and manage stressful events personally and professionally.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate Quality Assurance practices within the department.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise case records and to keep other relevant records.
  • Ability to meet the demands of an intense level of documentation.
  • Ability to work with and coordinate mental health services for clients.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • Must have the ability to move within and between agency buildings, standing, sitting, lifting and manipulating objects typically found in this work environment.
  • May be required to work at any agency building as needed/directed and be responsible for her/his own transportation.
  • May experience traumatic situations including hostile clients, clients’ family members, and/or responsible parties.
  • May be required to work extended periods of time at a video display terminal (VDT).
