McCarthy-Bush Corporation is seeking a Structural Engineer based out of Davenport, Iowa.


The Structural Engineer role is mix of both estimator and project manager responsibilities. This position is required to work with the customers to estimate any potential projects based on engineering drawings, architectural drawings, sketches, and concepts while balancing the goals of being low bid and making a profit for the company. After a successful project is awarded, the Engineer will be responsible to work with internal and external partners to ensure this project is completed on time, within budget, meeting quality expectations and within required specifications.


Position Responsibilities:

Estimating – 50%

  • Read and understand specifications, drawings and notes to create competitive bids for potential and current customers. Work with internal personnel, vendors, suppliers and management to achieve and submit cost-effective project estimates, while meeting specified project criteria and deadlines.
  • Problem solve and effectively communicate with customers to address any issues or understand the scope of a project
  • Coordinate all potential outsourcing needed of machining, trucking, galvanizing or other services for each project
  • Assist in CAD with drafting and detailing projects, as needed

Project Management – 25%

  • As the project point person, review the financial and schedule status of every project weekly. This includes analyzing any issues and communicating to both internal and external partners of the project regularly.
  • Maintain production records to track quality and production hours to accurately track jobs/projects
  • Coordinate project communications internally and externally, including significant project milestones, change in scope, approaching deadlines, billing details or other important information
  • Lead the documentation process through contracts, drawings, submittals, correspondence, specifications, purchase orders, and other documents
  • Oversee the purchasing duties of a project by negotiating pricing, identifying alternative sources of materials, issuing PO’s, and approving vendor invoices

Sales – 25%

  • Actively engage in locating profitable project opportunities
  • Respond to inquiries from potential customers with information regarding our companies, while maintaining and building the current and potential customer bases
  • Establish dialogue with general contractors who are bidding the same projects to gain competitive intelligence

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of building codes such as AISC Steel Manual, AWS D1.1, ASTM Standards and internal building codes
  • Previous use of tools such as Autocad, Fabtrol, Fabsuite and Autosketch. Must also have experience with estimating software.
  • Industrial knowledge of production processes including plasma cutting, forming, shearing, machining and welding
  • Excellent customer service and sales skills
  • Ability to “roll your sleeves up” and get the job done
  • Demonstrated honesty, integrity and drive to be the best

Previous Experience & Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial or Structural Engineering, Construction or Architecture
  • Prior experience as a project manager or estimator in the structural steel or fabrication industry required
