Under general supervision and direction of the Streets Supervisor or Streets Equipment Operator, the Maintenance Worker II performs semi-skilled work to maintain and repair the City’s streets, right-of-ways and drainage system. Position may work independently or part of a crew, depending on the assigned task.

Examples Of Essential Duties:
Maintain a high standard of safety, conduct and performance

  • Operates various types and sizes of trucks and motorized equipment, such as dump trucks, tractors, bobcats, backhoes, front loaders, paver, asphalt roller, jackhammer, street saws and other power tools; inspects vehicles and reports maintenance as required.
  • Works with and assists in the mentoring and training of other employees
  • Performs concrete pours; builds forms for concrete projects including sidewalks, curbs, gutters and drive approaches.
  • Shovels, rakes, tamp and levels asphalt.
  • Assist and take lead in setting up work zone traffic control.
  • Assists in street striping, sign fabrication, installation and repair operations
  • Performs channel maintenance including mowing, weed eating, tree trimming etc.
  • Performs street maintenance such as pot hole repairs and crack sealing
  • Collects and removes debris from streets and right of way areas.
  • Cleans storm drain inlets and flumes.as needed.
  • On call / stand by operations for inclement weather including snow/ice treatment and removal, flooding and emergency response
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the public through courteous and cooperative interactions
  • General maintenance of public works equipment, barricade maintenance, filling sand bags, materials inventory etc.
  • Provides assistance to other divisions as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; AND one (1) year of experience in road construction, street maintenance or concrete work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Watauga Drug Policy.
Knowledge of:

  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • City ordinances and applicable state laws.
  • Street and drainage maintenance and construction practices and methods.
  • Tools, equipment, methods and materials used in public works and drainage activities.
  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision.
  • Work zone safety procedures.
  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Customer service principles and practices.
  • Principles of record keeping and file maintenance.

Skill in:

  • Interpreting and applying City codes, laws and regulations.
  • Reading and understanding manuals, plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Maintaining accurate field records.
  • Operating heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City departments, external government agencies, vendors and contractors.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Texas Class A commercial driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
