About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.


The Legal department provides exceptional counsel that assures legal compliance and enables FirstEnergy to optimize business outcomes in all legal, regulatory and commercial contexts. The Legal department is involved in every major activity and initiative involving all FirstEnergy entities.

The position will serve as a legal advisor to various business units, including, Supply Chain, Fuels, Business Development, Emerging Technologies, Customer Policy & Solutions, and Competitive Products & Services, with emphasis on commercial and general corporate matters. The successful candidate will (a) work directly with the business units, department lawyers and outside counsel on all aspects of the foregoing; (b) handle complex legal matters and projects; (c) conduct legal research, negotiate, draft and edit legal documents; and (d) serve on cross-functional teams assisting senior attorneys in representing the organization in various matters.


The position reports to the Associate General Counsel who is responsible for SEC, corporate, finance, M&A, and other matters, who is located at the corporate headquarters in Akron, Ohio.


Hybrid/Remote: This position can be sited at any location within the FirstEnergy service territory. (OH, PA, WV, NJ & MD)


Responsibilities:


  • Managing, assisting, and handling, as applicable, commercial and general corporate legal matters for various FirstEnergy business units, including, Supply Chain, Fuels, Business Development, Emerging Technologies, Customer Policy & Solutions, and Competitive Products & Services.

  • Negotiating, drafting, and editing legal documents, including supply chain agreements for the provision of products and services (commodity purchase agreements, consulting agreements, technology procurement contracts, such as SaaS and software licenses), confidentiality agreements, various transactional agreements (asset purchase and sale agreements), and corporate governance materials.

  • Advising senior attorneys and management on procurement contract-related matters.

  • Bringing thought leadership and a proactive approach in enhancement of FirstEnergy’s contracting processes, including contract management and the development of contract templates, negotiating playbooks and training.


Qualifications


  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.

  • Qualified candidates will be licensed to practice law in the United States, a member in good standing with a State bar, and the ability to either become a member of the Ohio State bar or qualify for corporate counsel registration in Ohio within twelve months.

  • In-house legal department experience preferred but not necessary.

  • Minimum 5 years professional work experience required with focus on procurement contract-related matters and general corporate matters.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (including good listening skills) and the ability to achieve positive outcomes through influence.

  • Demonstrates analytical abilities, including problem solving and decision making.

  • Demonstrate maturity to exercise independent judgment on projects and assignments.

  • Ability to work with all levels within the organization; experience interacting with senior management preferred.

  • Ability to provide sound legal advice that is responsive to the business needs of FirstEnergy.

  • Ability to respond to clients’ needs consistent with corporate values, strategies, risks, and objectives.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.

  • Manages outside counsel to deliver quality and cost-effective expert legal guidance on legal matters as necessary.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Word.
