Primary Function:

ChristianaCare is currently seeking a Full-Time Staff Associate Patient Financial Services Surgical Coder responsible for providing operational, technical, and coding support for the Physician Billing Department as well as the individual physician groups.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Reviews operative reports and assigns appropriate ICD-10 codes, CPT-4 codes, and modifiers.
• Reviews documentation to determine services that are billable outside the global surgical period.
• Works closely with physicians to ensure accuracy in the coding and documentation of services.
• Provides billing department with documentation required for claims submission.
• Contacts insurance companies to obtain precerts.
• Assigns the appropriate fees and batches the services for submission to the billing department.
• Trains new employees in coding and billing responsibilities.
• Monitors work flow to ensure accounts receivable goals are being met.
• Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High school graduate or equivalent- associate's degree preferred.
• Five years experience in physician coding/billing.
• AAPC Certification (CPC) required.
• Surgical coding experienced required.
• Strong knowledge of SMS/Soarian preferred. Multi-specialty background preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
